Where were the Kerry Kamp finger pointers on 3/15/03?
Maybe Kerry still thought he had a chance back then and didn't need to twist Dean's words out of desperation?

Senator Kerry was reported to have said that he could win without the South. I don't want to win without the South. I want to go to the South, and I'm going to say to white guys that drive pick-up trucks with Confederate flag decals on the back of their car, "We want your vote too, because your kids don't have health insurance either."

Address to California State Democratic Convention
Saturday March 15, 2003

Sacramento, California (March 15, 2003)

1. Yep. not 'news' at all.
Just a desperate attack by a desparate Senator who sees the nomination slowly but surely slipping away from him.

2. Kerry wasn't even campaigning yet in March.
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 06:42 PM by Feanorcurufinwe
He didn't even announce his campaign till September.

Guess what, things are going to get hotter, not colder as we get into winter. Can the Dean camp stand the heat?

11. If Dean blows up the "Southern Strategy"...
You can bet I'll be damn proud.

Guess since Kerry doesn't "need" the South, he should butt out.

13. Clue: Dean wasn't so proud of signing the civil union bill in public
but I can assure you that will be used against him quite publicly with the southern Confederate flag crowd in a general election.
Dean is a walking talking disaster as a potential nominee.

26. There is a word for that
which I am not allowed to use but for the record.

The Vermont Constitution can be amendended. It isn't terribly easy but it isn't terribly difficult either. Only one step required a 2/3 vote (an initial vote in the Senate). He could have done what the Democratic governors of not one but two different states did. Both Alaska and Hawaii had substantially similar decisions made by their Supreme Courts, both states had referenda to amend their constitutions. There are no marriages in either state. There are no civil unions in either state. Gays and lesbians in both of those states are forbidden from marrying or having any recognition for their relationships at all.

In addition, one hour after the decision was handed down Dean advocated civil unions. A scant four months later the law was passed and everyone running in 2000 said that was Dean's doing. There was no public ceremony which I think was a mistake but you know what. Give me the choice between having my relationship recognized by the government I help fund and no ceremony or no rights and I will take the first choice.

It should be noted that Massachusetts is showing us what happens when people dither. As the SC there takes ages to decide the legislature is gearing up an anti marriage referendum. So yet again, gays and lesbians will be stiffed. Howard got this done. No one else has. He could have signed the bill on Mars for all I care.

28. There was no public signing because the state NEEDED to heal
It was a very ugly battle and Dean didn't want to prolong it with any pomp and circumstance. It was the first step in moving forward and it was the right choice to make. At the time, the majority of Vermonters opposed the Civil Unions Bill. The way Dean handled it minus the fanfare helped people accept it and now the majority supports it.

14. Kerry didn't say it, you are reading the quote incorrectly.
They are just trying to say because Kerry didn't attack in March over similar remarks his attack is invalid now or something... I don't really get it.

Dean spread another GOP lie with his comment about Kerry. Did that bother you?

12. I was here driving you crazy
over Kerry's IWR vote. Guess you blocked it out.

1. I don't recall anyone proving Kerry's comment was a lie, so there was nothing to be bothered about.

2. I don't recall Dean's statement at the time being condemned by Kerry, or generating a multi-thread spam-storm on DU.

Guess Kerry's "organazation" here was not up to speed yet?

25. There is no organization here, and there never has been.
Dean's statement got some criticism here when he first made it. Mostly from Southerners.

Noone could find a quote to back up what Dean repeated. I knew Kerry was laying groundwork in SC and Georgia when that claim was made. You KNOW Dean got that report from Newsmax. Why did Dean repeat a Newsmax report when there was NO quote from Kerry that backed up their claim?

23. it is now officially november.
dean's recent remarks, in addition to his statements that affirmative action should be based on "class, not race" (which sharpton smacked him down for) and the fact that he is licking the jackboots of mega-conglomerate violently anti-democrat special interest NRA is a disturbing pattern.

dean is pandering by the seat of his pants and will be trampled by BUSH INC. and their mighty multi-millions because he has no serious democratic alternative message other than to react to bush. the people he has recently been pandering to in the primaries will vote for BUSH INC. in the general anyway because dean's message is difinitively bush-lite, except he wants to raise everyone's taxes.

27. Hilarious
There are so many threads in this forum about Dean's remarks, it's ridiculous.

One poster says that this will surely sink Dean's campaign! (But I think he had his fingers crossed.)

An old favorite poster (heh) even came back to pile on!

Once again, Dean makes news...and the other candidates make statements about Dean's statement...LOL. Guess that's one way to get your name in the papers.
