Dean has a Haliburton board member donating to his campaign
http://boomshock.blogspot.com/2003_10_26_boomshock_archive.html#106732899123402477

Has anyone read about this?

This blogger actually treats this in a very even-handed manner.

1. Sniff, sniff, sniff, sniff
I smell Rove. Can politicians control who contributes to their campaign? I remember Crandall from the time I lived in Texas. He's a real stink, too.

2. Maybe it's a "remorseful" Halliburton Board Member. The blood on his
hands won't wash off as hard as he trys day after day after day after day.

6. If he's remorseful, he's giving to the wrong candidate:
From the site.

I conducted a Nexis search. For the past five years, the words "Howard Dean" and "Halliburton" yielded 38 articles. Only one article, however, proved relevant. On May 8, AP had the following sentences in the eleventh paragraph:
One of the Democrats' presidential hopefuls for 2004, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, injected the contract into his campaign. "This coziness with Halliburton doesn't surprise me a bit," Dean said in Concord, N.H. "It's an emblem of an administration that has sold this country down the river."
A "Halliburton" search on Dean's Web site yielded five results, of which two were duplicates. In a September 23 speech, Dean said: "The oil companies write our energy policy; big pharmaceutical companies draft Medicare reform without price controls; and in Iraq, Halliburton is awarded a $1.7 billion no-bid contract." On October 10, his campaign issued a statement on the anniversary of the Iraq war resolution's authorization, as well as the attachments "Operation Iraqi Freedom: By the Numbers" and "A Year to Regret: Twelve Months of Failed Leadership," which mention Halliburton. In an October 16 presentation at Georgetown University, he remarked: "We were told there wasn’t enough money to fix up our nation’s electric grid, but there <...> seems to be plenty to contract with Halliburton to fix up Iraq’s."

4. Another take on this.
http://www.bigleftoutside.com/

By the way, Republicans are making Haliburton RICH!!!!

Why would any board member want anyone but Bush-Cheney in office?

7. This Crandall fellow...
has given to Dems and Repubs alike in the past:

Dems:
$2000 to Bob Graham (1997)
$1000 to Byron Dorgan (1997)
$1000 to Lipinski (1997)

Repubs:
$1000 to Bush (2000)
$1000 to McCain (1997)
$1000 to Mullanax (1998)

And A LOT of money to the American Airlines PAC (he was an AA Exec).

Maybe he's just covering his bases, who knows?

I like the irony of Dean using even a little bit of Halliburton board member money to beat Bush.

8. Crandall Also Gave to Bob Kerry
The Nebraska Democrat and possible future running mate for the 2004 Democratic nominee.

It's certainly worth pointing out that Howard Dean has, by far, the largest number of contributors of any Democratic nominee. That's both because he has raised so much but also because his average contribution is the most modest. So if you want a candidate who's not beholden to a small group of big money donors, Dean's your guy.

9. When did he give to Kerrey, and what committees was Kerrey on at the time?
Something that affected the airline industry? Energy industry?

Kerrey won't be the VP nominee after that information about 'nam came out. He's out of politics for good.

12. Incidentally, Crandall retired from AMR. Haliburton could be he his...
...largest financial interest now. Although he probably does have AMR stock.

10. A bit OT, but does anyone here use Netflix?
Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, is a Dean supporter. Gave $2000 to his campaign, and was at the San Jose fundraiser last month.

I love Netflix! Even if I don't recirculate the DVDs very much, I probably still save money on late fees. And their service is excellent.
Thumbs up to Reed Hastings!

13. If Dean spends as little time complaining about Netflix as he does about
Haliburton, the Netflix thing might be interesting.

15. Dean's position: "Netflix very very good. Halliburton very very bad."
And I know that without even looking it up. :)

Are you really trying to suggest that Dean is protecting Halliburton because this Crandall fellow gave him $2000? You're kidding, right?

18. Psst. This came from some guy's blog.
Edited on Mon Nov-03-03 11:23 AM by AP
Did you read the whole blog. It's actually very intelligently written.

And, by the way, the allegation is along the lines that Dean isn't criticizing Haliburton very much, and the implication goes beyond simply the donation.

Dean's was very well-liked by energy deregulators and privatizers in VT.
