This story published online: November 04, 2003

By PEGGY SENZARINO, Of The Globe Gazette

HAMPTON - Warm sweet-rolls and coffee were served up with a heaping helping of presidential politics as U.S. Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) made a campaign stop at a Hampton bakery Monday morning.

About 30 interested citizens crowded into the Korner Bakery in downtown Hampton to hear from the Democratic hopeful.

"I thought he was really good," said Cynthia Schwake, an employee at the bakery and a single, working mother with two children.

"I'm all for helping people get off welfare," Edwards said adding that the program is designed to help women like Schwake who are trying to help themselves. "I'm for helping people. I'm not for punishing them. You are a perfect example about what we ought to be encouraging. "

Edwards pledged to repeal the Bush Administration tax cuts and shift the tax burden from working families.

Also on hand Monday morning was Mildred Van Hobe, Franklin County Democratic Party chairwoman. Van Hobe said she was "quite impressed" with Edwards.

Work vs. wealth. Tax burden shifted. This is hitting the heart of this economic disaster.
