What's going on in Mississippi? TPM mentions "irregularities"
Josh Marshall from www.TalkingPointsMemo.com says that in Mississippi the Republicans are practicing the unheard of technique of intimidating black voters by videotaping them at their polling precincts. Is this correct? Do any DUers know anything about this?

13. Turnout
High turn out reported in south Mississippi and in Madison County. Sounds bad for Democrat Governor Ronnie Musgrove. It could be a breakthrough election for the GOP. Its still possible for the Dems to hold firm, polls haven't closed yet.

2. trying to find out...
but in any case, if anyone connects with anyone who can confrim these reports, here's a direct line to a Clarion Ledger reporter in Jackson:

If you experience problems in voting today, call staff writer Clay Harden at (601) 961-7265.

Seems that Diebold may rear its head here too.

4. oh my god, what the hell year is this anyway????
You would think that after Selection 2000 there would be tons of people at the polls just in order to prevent this sort of thing...
Will do some checking around as well to try to confirm before totally freaking out here....

6. They missed the Dean memo
Vote for health care and Put Race Aside!!

I know this is mean spirited, but come on, this has been the point I've been trying to make all along.

7. Reply:
"South Carolinians have voted Republican for 30 years," said Dean, who appeared on stage with no jacket and blue short-sleeve shirt. "Tell me what you have to show for it?"

"Nothing! Nothing!" several in the crowd shouted back.

"The Legislature cut $73 million out of the public school system. Jobs gone to other countries especially in textiles. People haven't had raises in five years because their health insurance premiums took their raise in pay," Dean said.

"If you're satisfied with that, you ought to vote for George Bush," he said. "But maybe you ought to vote Democratic again. Because when white people and black people and brown people vote together in this country, that's when we make social progress."

10. This is better
But still, Howard Dean says he talks about race to everyone. This may be talking about race, but it isn't talking about racism. What happened in Mississippi is racism and you can't wish it away by voting together for health care.

In fact, I'm not aware if he's addressed today's occurences, or not.

9. In this case, it's concern
People ought to be upset about this video taping in Mississippi. And I'm sorry, but you just can't go down there and tell folks to set race aside and vote for health care when stuff like this is happening.

11. I really do believe you are misunderstanding
'set race aside'

He is telling those white folk down in the south who vote Republican because Republican's fuel thier hatred against Blacks that it is time for them to stop letting race decide their vote. The color of your neighbor isn't important. That is what we, as a society are supposed to be fighting for, for a time when the color of a man's skin doesn't mean squat.

He isn't saying 'let's not address race issues.'

I'm tired of these arguments because people hear what they want to hear. The anti-Kerry folk can't get over a vote for IWR and the anti-Dean folk want to turn everthing Dean says into some sort of holocaust. Believe what you will, and continue to shout in the wind. We'll meet up on the other side of the convention and hopefully be able to link arms and kick Bush out.
