Anybody else get the impression of a Kerry/Edwards deal? |
|
It really struck me last night during the debate that this was a real possibility. I find it completely plausible that Kerry may have offered Edwards the VP spot on his ticket, but to make this possible somebody's got to take Dean down and Edwards was pretty effective in doing that last night, atleast with the southern vote, and let's face it they ALL want the southern vote. I thought it was very interesting that Kerry sat back during the debate grinning like a Cheshire cat while Edwards railed against Dean on the Confederate flag issue. Edwards knows he has little to no chance for the nomination, so VP must be a pretty appealing offer at this point, after all it has historically landed many VP's into the oval office on many occasions in the past. We're all a bunch of saavy political junkies here and we all know any New England candidate is going to pick a southerner for a running mate, it just makes sense and these guys momma's didn't raise no fools. Dean intimated Graham was on his short list, (a New Englander and a Southerner) and you know Kerry has his eye on someone from the south too, and why not Edwards, they are pretty close on all the issues, both senators, both voted for the war etc. We are all aware that Kerry, Gephardt and others have joined a concerted effort to make sure Dean doesn't get the big union endorsement tomorrow, if they work together this closely, it makes perfect sense to me that other "joint" efforts amongst themselves are going on, it's politics, more at, it's politics as usual, a nasty business for some turns into an opportunity for others.

But I don't agree that Edwards thinks he can't win, I don't think it is a partnership based on this.
I read an Msnbc embed reporter talking about how Kerry jumped out of his car when he spotted Edwards on the street a month or two ago, and that they conducted a little conference there on the sidewalk.
Also, did you notice how friendly Kerry and Edwards were to each other during the debate, they sat next to one another and they were talking and joking during the debate I noticed when the other candidates were on the floor speaking.
But I think there might be a deal between them as you suggest for a ticket, but not only for Kerry at the top of the ticket, I don't discount Edwards winning just yet. This is all speculation though, of course.

2. But why did Edwards have to appeal to regionalism... |
|
In his response to Dean?
Don't we get enough states rights regionalism from the likes of Trent Lott?
At least that's how I took:
"The last thing we need in the South is somebody like you coming down and telling us what we need to do"
Unfortunately, for Civil Rights to succeed in the South, other people did have to come down and tell some states what to do. Does Edwards think that was wrong?
I thought his statement was so very sad and divisive...more lobbing bombs in response to a disagreement...and no high road in sight.
I did really like that Edwards was approaching the campaign with civilty, but now he's swinging a "Northern candidates need not apply" bat to bludgeon others with?

|
Edwards meant people like you as people like Dean who generalize poor southerners as people who embrace the confederate flag. Edwards couldn't be anymore clear.
Please stop thw spin! Let the Republicans do that...
You are only putting words in Edwards mouth.

He isn't clear until he explains what he meant.
Neither you nor I can speak for him.
I am guilty as charged, and I believe you are as well.

22. I Thought Edwards Was Convincing |
|
When he said, "I know these people. I know how they react to comments like that." It seemed to me that Edwards was trying to give Dean a chance to redeem himself. I think even Dean supporters were shocked when he didn't take the opportunity (until doing it half-assed this morning).

|
Do those people seem shocked?
I'll let you know how the people at our Meetup tonight responded to it...I talked to one on the phone last night about it...there was no shock there.
How many Dean supporters do you regularly hang out with?

30. You are acting tone deaf as Dean |
|
What Edwards said was that as a party you can't go South, or anywhere, or to groups (like young people, remember him saying that?) and tell them that you know they have been fooled into following the Republicans but that you know what's best for them. Edwards went after Dean's elitism. He didn't mention Dean's stupidity on this issue.

8. I watched the replay last night. |

I knew what was said, so I watched the other candidates instead of Dean while he was being attacked. The delighted smirk on Kerry's face and the looks between he and Edwards said it all. They'd rather lose to Bush than Dean.

as the Dems devour themselves. It just goes to show that the progressives, as the thinkers, need only tear themselves apart. The Republicans can't win by comparing policies, they can only win when we are scatterbrained and idealistic.

I said earlier that there was a tag-team thing going on, but a part of me thought it was just my conspiracy-mind running wild. But now that I review the debate, you're right! Kerry/Gephardt have tried to tear down Dean with medicare and got nowhere. So why not try the flag issue? Well, good for you guys -- you did it. You made Dean apologize for NOT being a racist and for going for the white southern vote we need to beat shrub. Congratulations!

20. Sharpton was kissing Kerry's butt too last night |
|
I have long had issues with Sharpton
He is very entertaining and I agree with much of whathe says.
But his playing the Nazi card with Dean was unaccaptable.
They should ALL have been discussing the Bush's Nazi cards.
If Sharpton knows so much about partying with Theresa Heinz then WHAT have they been doing???
Planning to try to ruin Dean, I would guess.

21. Sharpton is a charasmatic figure who..... |
|
has an agenda and throwing his hair, (I mean his hat) into the democratic presidential ring only helps him advance his aspirations. He would like to replace the disgraced Jesse Jackson as the new black messiah media darling. He is no Jesse Jackson and he's damn sure no Martin Luther King, Tawana Brawley is still too fresh in my mind. He cares nothing about the democratic party, he is a dangerous spoiler and he is loving every minute of it.

23. I Would Be Pysched For A Kerry-Edwards Ticket |
|
Through the months, Edwards has really risen in my estimation. He's a gentleman, and one hell of a talker. He has a general reputation for staying out of the bickering, which gives last night extra credibility with me.
I would love to see Edwards take on Cheney! Grisham character takes on Dr. Halliburton. There'd be some sparks that night!

26. The two candidates who had the most to lose from a disaffected black |
|
democratic base were the candidates to take on Dean. Edwards needs the black vote to turnout. Dean's talk makes black voters wonder if they have a home in the party.
Edwards had to take this on for himself, not for Kerry.

27. Also, it was most appropriate for Edwards, |
|
who grew up as a poor white Southerner, and Sharpton, who's black, to take on Dean for insulting blacks and poor white Southerners.
As I've said elsewhere, Edwards and Sharpton, for all that they were making points for themselves, were also telling Dean how to make amends and save his political ass, but Howard is too arrogant and stubborn to hear anyone's advice. Like Dubya, Howard is always right and won't back down. Though now that I think of the 2000 campaign, Dubya did apologize to Catholics for speaking at Bob Jones University by way of a letter to John Cardinal O'Connor. So Howard doesn't have Dubya's political smarts. As my husband said of Dean's non-apology today, "It's the doctor as God syndrome. He doesn't know how to admit he's wrong"

28. Don't count out Liberman |
|
With the trio of Gephardt, Kerry, Edwards attacking Dean.... Dean might make a serious error and the public will then be turned off from all four. Low and behold the white knight saving the Democratic Party .....Senator Joseph Lieberman. Yes it was odd to see Kerry sitting back and being relaxed. But I am still worried about Kid Joe sitting being more relaxed and too silent.
