Kerry Invokes Bush's Carrier Landing to Emphasize Points
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 12:09 AM by Feanorcurufinwe
With this 30-second advertisement, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts becomes the first major Democratic hopeful to use President Bush's well-known visit to the carrier Abraham Lincoln on a combat refueling plane, an S-3B Viking, on May 1, when he declared the end of major combat operations in Iraq. The spot, called "Carrier," is to be broadcast on television stations throughout Iowa and New Hampshire starting today. Campaign officials would not say how long it would run or how much they paid to place it.

ON THE SCREEN The spot opens with a quick shot of the "Mission Accomplished" banner featured on the carrier. It then shows Mr. Bush on the flight deck in an olive-green flight suit and with a helmet tucked beneath his left arm. Inspirational music kicks in as the spot continues. An announcer runs through Mr. Kerry's record while the advertisement goes on to flash images of Mr. Kerry at various points in his life

<snip>

THE SCRIPT An announcer says: "Who can take on George Bush and change the direction of the nation? John Kerry. A leader on national security. A decorated combat veteran. Served on the Intelligence Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee. John Kerry. He's fighting for you, against the Bush tax giveaways for corporations and the wealthy. And his health care plan covers the uninsured and holds down costs."

<snip>

with Democratic primary voters apparently in a Bush-bashing mood and Mr. Kerry's campaign eager to strike a loud chord, that may be a risk he has to take. The commercial does not pound viewers over the head with the image. In fact, the script does not refer to it once. Campaign strategists said that is because the moment speaks for itself and provides a good curtain raiser for a spot that highlights Mr. Kerry's vast experience as a soldier and politician. Some opponents pointed out the spot could draw attention to Mr. Kerry's vote to authorize combat in Iraq. Either way, the advertisement arrives in time to win Mr. Kerry attention for something other than the shake-up at his campaign headquarters.

5. Well the NY Times says Kerry is the first to do so, you say otherwise..

6. I think we can safely say that in this primary election
it doesn't matter what the truth is. What matters is how the media reports it. Since Dean is usually getting the benefit of lazy reporting, I'll take whatever benefits Kerry in the media!

9. Sounds like the Dean campaign got wind of the
ad coming out and hastily produced some spin that they were 'gonna' do it.

11. Yeah, but watch Dean's ad come out and get 10x the attention
That'll tickle, won't it? :)

Actually, I think ALL of the candidates should do an ad with this imagery. Hammer it home that Bush is a fraud.

12.  I'd be happy if Dean followed Kerry's lead on this.
Anybody pointing out Bush's hypocrisy is a good thing.

10. Dean campaign SAID he was planning on using it...Kerry had his filmed

already, and don't think that Dean's camp didn't know that when they made an ANNOUNCEMENT that they were going to use it just to steal Kerry's thunder and so their rabid supporters will go on message boards and proclaim that Kerry was copying Dean.

and on foreign policy leadership...you think it's brilliant when YOUR guy refused to take a stand against Reagan-Bush on IranContra, the biggest crime against the Constitution of the last 100 years? He had "mixed feelings"...THAT'S a leadership answer?

13. Kerry's ad came out first, and was in production
before Dean even mentioned he was using the carrier footage. Kerry didn't "steal" this idea. Is it only okay for Dean to use the footage?

14. Dean spokesman denies rumor.
"Dean spokesman Jay Carson told CBS News that there was and is no plan for Dean to make ads using the Bush aircraft carrier event."

15. kerry's been bashing shrubby for the carrier stunt all along
particularly because of his standing as decorated war hero, and dudududubya's AWOL status.

the ad is great :-)
