Why do offended people on DU call you a "Dean supporter"?
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 10:33 PM by Cronus
It seems to me that the slur, "you must be a Dean supporter" is fast becoming the insult du jour among the thin skinned here on DU.

It seems to be almost the equivalent of "you must be a freeper" these days. Oh well, if I were a Dean supporter, I'd be righteously indignant about alleged liberals using that as a slur, but since I like Dean but I've never sent him a dime, I'll defer to Dean's true supporters on this issue.

I'd get in my obligatory attack on Lieberman here, but I'd surely be accused of being a "Dean supporter", so I'll refrain in order to keep this thread civil.

What do you true Dean supporters have to say about this?

1. who cares?
I support him and give him money. I don't care if "Dean supporter is an insult". Some people think Liberal or Democrat are insults. Still others think "Geek" or "Nerd" is an insult too.

I say who gives a shit?

I am proud of being called
a Dean supporter, so it doesn't bother me at all.

OT:

Someone had a sign at JJ dinner that said, "I see Dean People". I bought one of your, "I see Dumb People". Could you do up some Dean ones?

3. The only ones who think it's a slur
are the ones whose candidate is losing...

'nuff said.

4. Since you asked
I am tired of the constant dissing of Dean supporters as some combination of the following. Emotional, irrational, inexperienced, ignorant of issues, unwilling to rebut criticism, unwilling to brook criticism, dishonest, spinning, lying, and cultlike.

It is particularly gauling when I post threads with detailed positions backed up by links. It is particularly maddening when those threads sink like rocks due to Dean critics never bothering to answer them. It is particularly annoying when the above comes from posters who refuse to provide links. doctor photos, refuse to correct errors, and post undocumented rants.

So yes, I do get tired of the juvenile crap.

7. I personally have noticed Dean supporters, in general, being enthusiastic
I don't think that warrants using their enthusiasm as a slur, particularly coming from others who claim to be liberal Democratics.

It seems to me it's antithetical to use support for another candidate as a slur and still claim to be wanting the same result as those so denigrated; which is to kick Bush out of office in 2004.

11. Is this the 'doctored' photo you mean?

It actually only 'cropped' - you do understand the difference between those two terms don't you?

Here's the original picture:

I think it actually is more effective though when you can see Carol laughing at Dean behind his back.

What a picture of childish, self-righteous anger.

16. The one with Dean in front of an Israeli flag and a huge picutre of Sharon
I had to literally ask a half dozen times to get the person who posted that photo to admit it was a phony.

6. I don't care.
I think the Dean campaign is part of the reason why the Democratic party has gotten it's spine back in the past few months.

I don't think any of these candidates would have a chance without it. Look at some of the posts from around March-July.

8. Every candidate has some overzealous supporters
It's not limited to Dean. If there are more Deaniacs than Denny-freaks, it's only because there are more general Dean supporters than Kucinich supporters here.

19. how is being called a Dean supporter a slur?
If you support Dean, then you're a "Dean Supporter", right?

I've seen Dean supporters called a lot worse here on DU. I don't understand what you're trying to say.

20. I take it in stride...
Because I've had my real world experience of seeing Dr. Dean at Navy Pier in Chicago with 2,000+, going to Meetups locally since August, and great conversations with relatives and friends who are generally shifting Dean's way.

DU is not the same as the real world, as we all know.
