Poll: Bush would beat Democratic challengers in Arizona
Poll: Bush would beat Democratic challengers in Arizona

PHOENIX - President Bush would defeat all of the leading Democratic candidates if the presidential election were held in Arizona today, according to a new poll.

The poll of 409 registered voters found that Bush would defeat former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, 50 percent to 35 percent; retired Gen. Wesley Clark, 49 to 34 percent; Sen. John Kerry, 51 to 33 percent; and Sen. Joe Lieberman, 49 to 34 percent.

Interesting... Kerry does the worst against Bush in this poll (Bush ahead by 18%), while he holds the same 15% difference with the rest.

1. Is there a record of other polls?
From what I have seen out of polls in Arizona, Bush's ratings have been doing very poorly.

3. Those are FANTASTIC numbers for a Dem in Az
With Bush's "hard re-elect" right around 50%, that means AZ is already competitive and will only become more competitive over the next 12 months.

15. No they're not- Bush got 51 to Gore's 45 (Nader got 3) in 2000
We got a ways to go to win AZ.

5. well whatever man, but you AZ dems better get on the ball
or we are screwed..The South IS lost and if you do not see it you are blind..WE NEED SWING STATES..This is about Electoral Votes..NOT the popular Vote..I Believe Bush will lose the popular vote again but right now it looks like he will win the electoral vote...We need a grass roots campaigne like no other in history once the primary is over and our candidate is chosen.....

14. Except for the fact we probably do worse in the South.
So you're basically saying we can't win at all. Without AZ (due to these poll numbers) and the other southern states (with bad polls for us), its over. Looks like four more years.

Remember the money. Democrats will need to focus on states we can really win. I think AZ is one. I don't think any southern states are in play. Can you name one where Bush is more vulnerable there than in AZ?

9. Daily life experience in Arizona
suggests this poll is suspect.

7. Not to worry these early numbers don't mean didley
Bush doesn't do better than 51% against any of them.

Now what this and some other polls are indicating is that Dean isn't doing any worse than any other Democrat. For instance in Arizona, Dean and Clark are both 15 points behind and in New York (a Zogby poll indicates) they are both 5-points ahead of Bush.

8. Kerry hasn't seen this poll then.
"Every poll shows it -- I do better than Howard Dean against George Bush," Kerry said.

16. To be fair to Kerry....
They are all within MOE, so for Dean to act like... another candidate that won't be named and claim that he does better than Kerry because he may be 1% ahead without taking MOE into account.... That's just not cool.
