NYC crosstown bus presidential straw poll results
|
|
I just took the M72 bus from the upper east side (where my girlfriend lives) to the upper west side (where I live).
as people we getting on the bus the driver was asking them who they'd vote for if the choice were between Colin Powell & Hillary Clinton, and as we'd leave each stop he would announce the updated results.
as of the time I got off the bus the results were Colin Powell 47 votes, Hillary Clinton, 5 votes (one of which was mine).
FYI, I believe the upper east side neighborhood (zip code 10021) in which I boarded the bus has donated more to Bush/Cheney than any other neighborhood in the country.

and we're supposed to be so liberal here in NY. My guess is that there are a lot of moderate and even liberal Republicans who aren't thrilled with Hillary and would love someone like Powell, but they probably don't like the right-wingers.

4. Powell can't run as a Republican for president--he's black... |
|
And Republicans don't elect blacks unless they're football heroes.

get him to run in 1996?
Most Republicans in the Northeast aren't rascist, and many are actually quite liberal (remember Jacob Javits?) Even Pataki is probably more liberal than many Southern Democrats.
