CHARACTERS
(in alphabetical order; incomplete)
GREG (Greg Palast): About 43, dark, Jewish and Spanish looking, slightly below average in size; an intrepid individual with an unbeatable passion for his work. He's trim and very fit and looks like a fellow who won't take no for an answer from anyone who is hiding anything that everyone ought to know.
ACT ONE
Scene 1
STAGE RIGHT. LONDON. A LIVING ROOM. NIGHT. LIGHT UP on GREG (Greg Palast) in a chair, a PHONE nearby. Greg watches TV – the screen may be very large for the audience. (An ARCHIVE VIDEO TAPE of the following televised moments is available.) Greg is not sitting still: even in the chair his movements suggest intrigue and some concern with what he sees and hears.
ON THE TV: BBC FOOTAGE of a guest chat on Election Night with former Republican presidential candidate BOB DOLE, who expresses trust in the accuracy of exit polls and doubt, if Florida goes for Gore, that Bush could win without difficulty.
The broadcast and/or tape cuts to:
Through the BBC, an American TV network, based on exit polls, calls Florida for Vice President Al Gore. One commentator states that exit polls have been found reliably accurate over the last 32 years of elections.
This commentary will conclude the probability that, with Pennsylvania and other states he's won and is likely to win, Gore is to become the next President of the United States.
GREG
It won’t be that easy, Al.
The broadcast and/or tape cuts to:
INT. THE BUSH RANCH, CRAWFORD, TEXAS – NIGHT
We see on the TV, GEORGE W. and LAURA BUSH, BARBARA and GEORGE H.W. BUSH. Bush looks at his father, his father at he. They turn to their respective wives, who study their respective husbands. Somehow, not all is lost.
GREG
Bush's smirk means more than it
usually does.
LIGHT WAY DOWN ON GREG, S.R. TV GOES DARK.
STAGE LEFT. DIM LIGHTS/COLORING EFFECT suggest TV MONITORS, or we have the monitors themselves, of a TV studio. We also have a lit sign: FOX NEWS.
LIGHTS UP ON JOHN ELLIS, at DESK, PHONE, as the phone rings.
JOHN ELLIS
(into phone)
George?
(listens)
I know.
STAGE CENTER REAR. LIGHT SLOWLY UP ON a MAN in a POSH CHAIR, on PHONE. The man, we can tell in a moment, is GEORGE W. BUSH.
JOHN ELLIS
But it's in the bag. So don't call
anymore. Somebody’ll ask questions.
(laughs)
