Winning Modern Wars: Iraq, Terrorism and the American Empire
by Wesley C Clark
Westview Press £18.99, pp208

Anti-Americanism, a prejudice prevalent in much of the world today, is as dangerous and misconceived as any of the more ignorant opinions expressed by President Bush or his 'neocon' cronies. No state or society is monolithic. All are systems that function despite, or perhaps because of, the contest between different interests within. 'America', however conceived, is no different, and those who speak of it in such consistently pejorative terms should read Wesley Clark's well-informed and intelligent book.
snip
Clark is one of the most incisive of those voices. The four-star general and Vietnam veteran appears, in recent weeks, to have become the Democrats' best hope of ousting the incumbent of the White House in the next presidential election. Winning Modern Wars, though he denies it in his introduction, is effectively Clark's manifesto.

snip
America, he says, risks winning individual battles, even campaigns, but losing the war and losing itself. His analysis, manifesto or otherwise, is accurate, timely and important.

1. This is the intellectual groundwork to beat Bush over the war on terror.
This is also the intellectual groundwork to beat the other 2004 Dems.

4. and we desperately need
some brains in that White House....get us back on the right track. The world is just hoping that we'll do the right thing. Ironic how we've got the responsibility in this election of the welfare of the entire world. These are pretty critical times!

Winning Modern Wars Reviewed by Frances FitzGerald in The Nation

In Clark's view, American power resides to a large degree in the "virtual empire" the United States constructed after World War II: that is, among other things, its network of economic and security arrangements, the leverage it had in international institutions and treaty regimes, plus the shared values and reservoir of trust, or "soft power," that permitted past Presidents to lead by persuasion. Clark's forceful book warns that the Bush Administration is undermining this virtual empire and at the same time imperiling the "hard power" Bush counts upon, the power of America's economy and armed forces.
