Gay marriage to help Repukes not Dems? |
|
Saw an article in a local paper that said Repukes are going to try to use gay marriage as a "wedge" issue during the 2004 campaign.
Looks like they want this to energize their fundie base.

2. It might help them get out the vote a little, plus |
|
it might swing a few undecided to the repugs. Most people don't like change and are against this right now. It's weird, but most people everywhere on earth believe that what they believe and have are correct and that changes are bad. Progress takes time.

I've always been convinced that one of the reasons the previous George Bush lost was because the right-wing got arrogant and out-of-control at their convention and scared the hell out of the moderates. We can only hope they get that rabid again. If they do, I think it will work against them.

4. This will massively benefit Republicans |
|
On abortion the lines have solidified and frankly both sides have lost their fervor. Stalemate does that.
But this is a new battlefront. What makes this a massive win for Republicans is that the public can sense a tidal wave of 70's style cultural left judicial activism to turn America into West Hollywood coming. And they want that headed off at the pass.
It's another massive win for Republicans because a big push on gay rights will alienate the flyover, religious, blue collar Americans who would have listened to what the Democratic Party has to say about trade. They will not vote for a party dominated by bicoastal knowledge worker types who look down their noses at them.
It's another massive win for Republicans because blacks are culturally conservative and overwhelmingly fundamentalist Christian. They reject gay rights as any kind of civil rights issue. Dean is going to have a lot of trouble on Super Tuesday. So will any pro-gay marriage candidate. This will come to a head. Blacks/Hispanics vs Gays.

5. Isn't this really a fundamentally pointless issue? |
|

Where somebody sticks their privates into, whether it be a vagina or an anus, is really pointless IMHO. Nobody gets hurt, nobody loses money, etc. So what's really the point? There are a lot more repulsive sexual acts out there, such as dog-screwing, than homosexual activity which is simply anal sex that a lot of straight couples practise as well. For Bush to be re-elected, which equals more deaths abroad and jobs lost at home, on the crux of where a dick is stuck and where it's not, seems very trivial. I know some religious people, ranging from Judeo-Christians to Eastern faiths, have a problem with gays because God (s) meant for a man and a woman to be together. Fine, go ahead, I can't convince you otherwise. But surely they must value human life before sex. They should know that Bush will only cause further death in Iraq, a country that absolutely loathes him. Human lives or sex? Which one do you choose? The answer seems so obvious to me. It's like "I know George W. will keep our soldiers out to dry (meaning die) in the desert, but I approve of him because he and I agree on sex." It's just the age-old preoccupation with sex over more important things, like life and peace.
