Kentucky becoming 2004 Battleground

If found this on http://www.thehill.com

Lucas won’t seek fourth term in Ky.

Rep. Ken Lucas (D-Ky.) announced Monday he would not seek reelection next year. Lucas urged voters in Northern Kentucky’s 4th District to back Democrat Nick Clooney, a media personality and actor George Clooney’s father.

“Serving in Congress and representing the good people of this district has been the high point of my years in public service,” said the third-term Lucas, who earlier pledged that he would stay in Congress no longer than six years.

Republican Geoff Davis is running for Lucas’ seat as well.

Also, two senior Democratic Kentuckians are contending that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is doing a poor job in its quest to knock off GOP Rep. Anne Northup.

Lt. Gov. Stephen Henry (D), now raising cash for a possible race against the Louisville Republican, slammed the DCCC for picking poor candidates in the past.
And Louisville lawyer Jack Conway (D), who lost to Northup in 2002 by fewer than 8,000 votes, said he would not seek another match-up with the congresswoman, in part because the DCCC is focused on holding onto seats in Texas endangered by Republican redistricting.

Greg Speed of the DCCC declined to comment.

Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk Tony Miller (D) declared his candidacy to challenge Northup last week.

1. Glad to see that Miller is running against Northup
We desperately need that seat. Who does everybody think would make the best House candidate: Henry or Miller?

I really wish that Lucas would reconsider running for the Senate. He'd be the easy frontrunner and would keep Bunning in a highly competitive race. If he doesn't, Jonathan Miller would also be good.

Nick Clooney's entrance is a good thing. He's popular in Kentucky and will be a major player as soon as he goes to Washington, given his celebrity status.

We need Ben Chandler to run in KY-6. If he were to win, we'd have another pickup in a district that isn't inhospitable to Democrats. It would be a great pickup on the way to 2004.

2. Yes.
Without Clooney we would never have been able o compete in the sixth district.

Henry is a strong candidate. I don't know anything about miller.

Lucas would be a great challenger to Bunning. I wish paul patton hadn't gotten into all that trouble.

3. I don't really want Ken Lucas in the Senate
I just don't think he can be trusted not to switch parties. He won't vote for Nancy Pelosi to be Speaker. Can we expect him to support the Democratic leader to be Majority Leader? I don't think so.
