We might be in trouble..WP article

from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A20936-2003Nov29.html

2004 Is Now for Bush's Campaign
Early Advantage in Funds, Voters Sought

snip

Bush's campaign Web site already has signed up 6 million supporters, 10 times the number that Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has, and the Bush operation is in the middle of an unprecedented drive to register 3 million new Republican voters. The campaign has set county vote targets in some states and has begun training thousands of volunteers who will recruit an army of door-to-door canvassers for the final days of the election next November.

snip

The Bush team hopes to build on techniques first employed in 2000 and honed in 2002 through what is called the "72-hour project," which is shorthand for mobilization operations during the final days before the election. Democrats acknowledge these techniques proved highly effective as a counter to their mobilization efforts in earlier campaigns.

snip

The RNC has set state-by-state goals for registering voters, based on a formula that attempts to determine Bush's maximum potential vote percentage, all with an eye toward turning states that he narrowly lost or won in 2000 into winners next year.

In Oregon, which Bush lost to Al Gore by about 7,000 votes in 2000, the national committee's goal is to register 45,000 GOP voters by next year, enough to provide a cushion in a close election.

OK. so what does all this mean. It means that we have to counter this with registering 45,000 oregonians, 30,000 new mexicans, etc. We have to get started on this or we're gonna lose. this election is about getting out your base, not getting repukes or indies to switch to us. I believe even indies are becoming more partisan in voting.

So we have to start registering voters..Target likely dems, college campuses, churches, anywhere. I am starting a DU group to get this done. If anyone wants in and wants to coordinate voter registration activites and keep track of new dems registered let me know. let's see what we can do as DU! We will all get registered in our towns to register voters, and each one of us will go after 100 unregistered dems.

Rock rockin it.

Let me know if you to help!

1. We better control Diebold, too.
I HATE to say this, but we will lose in 2004. Or, we may win the vote and the Electoral College, but it will be stolen. Cheney and Rove will have it no other way. Start thinking about where to move to. This is the end of the United States of America, with all its history, triumphs and troubles, and the beginning of Pax Bush. I am sorry. In your gut, you know this to be the case.

2. Dupe, but pure BS
I'm sure 100% of the FreeRepublic signed up, but that's only 6,000. I'm sure every Pioneer and Ranger is on board...that's another 1500 people.

Absolutely no way have 6MM people signed up. If they had, wouldn't the RNC have been blasting this everywhere? They either got the story completely wrong or they, as usual, dodn't bother to independently corroborate the PR material they were sent.

5. 6 Million? Try 262,000...
::::262,000 Join the President's Campaign

We asked you to join President Bush's campaign by making a contribution to support his re-election. We are pleased to announce that 262,000 Americans from all fifty states and virtually every county in America responded to our call.

Campaign Manager Ken Mehlman said, "The broad, grassroots support for President Bush's re-election is reflected not only in the number of contributors but the incredible representation of 99 percent of America's counties." Thank you for this overwhelming show of support for the President and his positive agenda!

9. Look!that's not the point!!
Arguing about 6 million sign ups is not the issue!!
the point is that they will likely register even just 10,000 new repukes in every state which will tip the balance in most states. my call to you is to get together and start fighting back. For every one they register, let's register two. Contact your local unions, churches, etc. Let's get out the vote.

Contact me if you want to help and coordinate.
Let's not argue about the validity of the numbers, let's be proactive and do something about it!

3. I can only pray that Soros and perhaps Buffet can
counter some of this. We have some very good activists and I gotta hand it to moveon.org. They seem to be moving ahead.

10. The RNC actually MOVES voters into districts integral to the electoral map
The Democrats will never match that level of electoral deceit. We need to run a candidate that can best Bush in EVERY area so completely that it will neutralize most of their tricks.

13. DEan will be easy to beat.
Once the Bush administration gets him the nominaation, the news media will turn on Dean and point out that he is the candidate of the rich and can't keep his story straight. The news headline of the day - every day between then and the general election - will be "What else did Dean lie about?" Without the press on his side, after the nominatnion, Dean won't stand a chance. It's too bad his wish-washiness will be portrayed as out and out dishonesty.

16. This article has been posted three or four times already.
It's meant to scare you.

Don't take the bait.

This is not to say that getting out the vote isn't important; it certainly is!
