A friend's letter to the FCC re: Sinclair |

nice, thought it might work as a model for some, we need to mobilize!
ATTN: Inspector General Lynne McFarland Federal Electoral Commission
12 October 2004
Dear Inspector General McFarland,
I am a citizen concerned with what appears to me (a citizen and not an attorney) to be quite partisan activities by the media company Sinclair Broadcast Group.
According to news reports, this corporation is commanding its local affiliates to show all or portions of a clearly partisan documentary entitled "Stolen Honor." There is no objectively newsworthy portion of this story which is not related to the candidacy of the presidential candidate John F. Kerry. I recognize that the corporation replies that details of this program are based on indirect evidence. However, the concerns are serious enough to warrant the opinions of the FEC, in my view.
I am concerned that this gives an appearance of impropriety with respect to partisan activity by an FCC-recognized local broadcaster. In addition to having potential affects on the election itself, it seems that it may cause problems for the local broadcaster and the community it serves. (For example, the appearance of partisanship by a local station makes both local news reporting and commercial advertising troublesome as well--particularly when such partisanship is not the activity of an individual program but by the station itself.)
No one helped me write this letter or prompted it in any way. I am a voter and citizen, and resident at the address below.
Thank you for your time
