New MPAA head Glickman : "Hollywood's okay! -- Not all liberal! Really!" |
|
MPAA prexy Glickman makes his H'w'd debut Topper hoping to alter biz's partisan image By GABRIEL SNYDER Dan Glickman, in his first address to a Hollywood crowd since becoming Motion Picture Assn. of America prexy, said the perception in Washington, D.C., that the movie industry is uniformly Democratic is hurting biz interests.
Movie industry lobbyists have had difficulty getting things done this year in Congress, where Republicans are steamed about both the large number of celebrities who were outspoken in favor of John Kerry as well as the MPAAMPAA's decision to hire Glickman, a Democrat, to succeed Jack Valenti.
"A congressperson told me, first it was Whoopi Goldberg, then it was Dan Rather, and now there's Dan Glickman," he said.
He said his job in D.C. is to underline that "the business of Hollywood is nonpartisan. I can't do my job and the studios can't do their job if we are perceived as partisan."
<snip>
In a Q&A afterward, Glickman was asked whether the high number of voters who cited "moral values" as their most important issue in last week's presidential election presaged more culturally conservative criticism of Hollywood entertainment.
"I think it's a good question," he said, "but it's one I think I have to be a little vague on."

1. To be honest with you, I don't care.... |
|
I'm a complete movie buff. But true art flourishes with independence. My favorite music has been on independent labels, free of the corporate system and many of my favorite films have been indpendently funded/financed and then picked up by the system once they have become financially lucrative. We'll see how many morality tales get made and/or sell enough tickets and make enough money to keep the hollywood execs awash in cocaine and hookers. For every Passion Of The Christ there's also a Spitfire Grill or any one of the Left Behind Movies.

3. No, no...I guess I wasn't clear... |
|
My point simplified is: 1)Hollywood only cares about making money 2)Yes, the Passion of Christ made money, but largely because it was a glorified snuff film and people are way more voyeuristic than they are religious. 3)For every religious, moral movie like TPOTC which makes crazy bucks, there are many more religious moral movies like Spitfire Grill and Left Behind which tank, even with the religious right marketing muscle behind it.
Bottom line is until there is a spate of religious, moral movies that make crazy bank, Hollywood ain't gonna put out crap like that.

sorry for the misunderstanding...
and in a way, yeah, if the entertainment corporations did try dumbing down their "product" even more, they'd get pissed at "Hays Code II," or whatever they were chafing under, when it started to cost them.
Tho' one assumes violence will always be okay with these people -- it's just sex they want to crack down on...
