A question about the 1992 election
where Clinton won, and the Dems were still in power.

I'm serious about this.

Were there any editorial examples in the MSM where the media was saying that the Republican party was dead in the water?

I have been looking over the editorial pages of late 1992 early 1993 in the Akron Beacon Journal (a slow and tedious process - all on microfilm), and I encountered exactly one editorial where the left-leaning columnist was gloating over GHWB and the Repugs' loss to WJC.

There was also an article on the Religion page (on a Saturday) where the Religious Right was saying "We're not giving up the fight, we're regrouping and going to come out swinging!".

Anybody have any help on this? I would like to see some prime examples of the "left calling the Right dead in the water."

I do remember one Right columnist, well before the election, saying that GHWB handed the election to Bill Clinton.

Please?

1. I worked on the campaign locally
in my red state in my red precinct (Woodbridge, VA) and there was no question that Republicans were very popular there. Bush carried the state. We actually did get a Democratic woman into Congress though. And local politicians who are Democratic but popular still do well.

Actually I see your point here and yes, I think the country was about equally divided like it is now. The difference is we were not at war and 9/11 hadn't happened.

My precinct in Woodbridge - same town, different precinct - went blue this time, as did my old precinct. In fact, Woodbridge is becoming increasingly blue.

All we have to do is work precinct by precinct and it will add up in 2008 - if we refuse to let them steal it.

2. Bush 41 won the presidency....
because he was Reagan's VP. If you look at his resume, he was in Congress twice and ran for the Senate twice (I think) and had a few appointed positions until he ran for President in 1980. His father was a well-known Senator and the family was what we used to call "country club Republicans"--or "Rockefeller Republicans. They were moderates. I think that the Republicans felt about Bush the way many Democrats felt about Carter. Okay, he's President but he's not "really" our President if you know what I mean. I wish I could say that I pounded the pavement for Clinton in 1992 but I can't. I voted for him and I was glad he won but I was going through some personal trauma to have much time to campaign.
