Poll question: Does anyone listen to radio?
Between the wingnuts on the news/talk stations and the bland mix of music on the others... is there really any reason to listen to radio anymore?

Do you listen to radio on a regular basis?

1. NPR And The BBC
NPR in my car and the BBC at home on my Shortwave Radio. I can't stand the Rap Crap that's out and I refuse to listen to "hate" radio.

2. Yes. But ...
I have an independent modern rock station in my listening area that's been giving Clear Channel (and the predecessor in my area, Jacor, that had the same monopolistic policies as CC before they were swallowed up by the leviathan) fits for twenty years, now. Their newsletter last week, apparently, touted Mark Morford's colun on SFGate. The station's current 'swag' is a black shirt with the station logo and the motto, beneath, 'CORPORATE RADIO SUCKS.' They guy who owns and operates the station is a prince, in my opinion -- he's lost a lot of money, over the years, but he keeps plugging away at it. The DJs don't make enough money to live on -- most of them have second jobs outside their airshifts -- but they love it enough to keep doing it.

3. Yes
We have two good independent rock stations. There's also a good sports-talk station that is independent (at least, I THINK it's still indy).

4. Sort of...
XM Radio rules!! Never listen to anything else anymore. I haven't heard a commercial interruption in months and I often hear requests 10 minutes after I've requested them by email. You can't beat it.

5. Mostly on the internet, though.
I donate to NPR, but I'm a little mad at them for apologizing to O'Reilly for the whole "Fresh Air" ordeal. (Bullies can dish it out, but...)

6. KPFK in LA
Definitely Amy Goodman's Democracy Now (Pacifica Radio Network) in the morning. Lots of other good programming available throughout the week (you just have to get familiar with the schedule and tune in for the good shows).

Sometimes NPR.

Occassionally RW AM talk - but ONLY to see what the other side is saying (usually end up just getting pissed off and frustrated).

Hardly EVER listen to music on the radio. Most of it sucks.

7. yes. gotta keep tabs on the freepers.
i actually do try to spend a few minutes listening to them spew the white house talking points of the day.

and if you keep punching buttons you can cobble together a pretty decent diet here of rocknroll, and old blues & r&b, kfai in twin cities is often pretty good...of course they're independent & a semipublic station...

by the way ... the new Harper's Magazine has an interesting piece, the lead story in fact, on the evils of Clear Channel. I'll try to post a link later. It's very illuminating.

8. I can listen to public radio all day
They have great local programming on the NPR affiliate here. I must admit that Saturdays kind of drag though. Car Talk is really not that great of a show and by the time they get to "Wait Wait, don't Tell Me", I just switch it off.

Does anybody like that "studio 360" show? They play it on Sundays after ME/S and it seldom blows me away.

9. We have community supported radio here ...
... (not just NPR) that subscribes to the BBC news and "Jim Hightower Radio". We also have a non-clear channel rock station. Our NPR station is alright, but a little light on news these days...

12. WHERE ARE THESE GREAT COMMUNITY AND LO POWER STATIONS
mentioned by posters ...um`,was it nine and ten posts?

I listen to classical from NPR.. music that is... and all news CNN audio from tv, it seems.. not made for radio. When sports takes that away now and then, i retreat to colored gospel on an independent little station...WBOK. Art bell when i can ignore his libertarianism.. and his replacement on weekdays... whose politics seldom emerge.

I have not stomached rush since years ago, when i figured him out... attacking GREENPEACE for putting a banner up about polluters dumping into my river source of drinking watere. Told me how much rush cares about my personal tapwater! Not one bit, it seems.

Anyone still listen to the ancient five minute bombaster.. an early rush.. forget his name.. "page one" is his famous trademark. plus ending with "good DAY!" and lots of humor.
(he was training a young guy last year i think)
His ancient bombastic voice is a lot like the tv roundtable host who includes buchannan at the table.

ieamericaradio.com is the cutting edge of decent folks radio. check it out. http://www.ieamericaradio.com/
Had Werbe, has Hartmann and Mike Malloy. May still have werbe for all i know. How is gore's cable tv venture coming?

/// back on repub radio topic...Did Hitler also use humor to get his propoganda out? (Rush gives humor a bad name.)

13. NPR gripes
cartalk must go. duplicates local stuff, and blocks out classical music. we also get "american roots" trash show on npr... every kind of bad bad music you can name, is its mainstay. Alsoleads people to continue inward patriotism, when they need to look at the rest of the world for a change. I griped and got a rude email from the local manager. really rude.

Funny thing, "american roots" duplicates a "rhthym and blues and jazz origins" station right next to it .. NPR..on the dial. What a waste of NPR time. Reminds me of how educational tv channel here , is now partly used for reruns of LAWRENCE WELK and in the past, for short while, for HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL and HOWDY DOODY SHOW reruns. Can you believe it? Still used for old movies like the musicals-on -film, really brainless twaddle. Canadian mountie singing with perfect hairdo gal in perfect dress with petticoat. That sort of film. travesty of the educational origin of channel twelve. Once, it actually was educational.. chemistry on sunrise semester.
Cheers,
Oscar

That was a great idea. I believe the whole thing has been rescinded by the FCC. Mainstream broadcasters bitched mightily about it.

14. Radio is a shell of its' former self
I listen to WBGO (Jazz/NPR) and WBAI (Pacifica) in the NY market. I'll check out WNYC (NPR) sometimes but have given up on much of their programming since they've become very corporate.

I don't listen to talk radio. If there was some balance then I would listen to some RW talkie but why listen to that crap all the time? It just gets you aggravated.

For all the stations in the NY market there's not much interesting to listen to. Lots of bad music. Not much classical. I'll surf the college stations. That's the only chance of picking up something out of the mainstream (except for Pacifica).

Gave up on Howard Stern years ago. Got tired of listening to him talk about himself. The show got old...

I've always loved radio. After all you can enjoy it while doing something (almost anything), unlike TV. Sometimes I'll scan the SW bands also. Good to hear how the rest of the world sees things.

But with ClearChannel, voicetracking/automation, etc. there's not much compelling radio.

16. KGNU (Pacifica community network), NPR and....
a local, occasional jaunt onto the Clear Channel "World Class Rock" station.

Before you rip my head off and shove it down between my shoulders, KBCO had to have gotten one sweetheart of a deal when they sold since the station is older than the CC corp. They are publically liberal (they'd have to be, they're based in the People's Republic of Boulder, my home....) activist, and nothing like any other CC station I've ever heard.

They even played the banned songs that fit their format- and listed the rest on their website - when CC put out the banned song list after 9-11.

My gripe with NPR is the lack of local and up to the minute news - is traffic that hard to do?; my gripes with KGNU are I'm not into world music and "found" music and liberal though I might be, there is a limit to the amount of new-age mysticism I can take. (I have a background in classical music since mum wanted me to be the next Glenn Gould.) The CC station fills both of those slots nicely and since I don't buy anything I hear advertised anyway....

Also understand that we don't to television. Without the internet, KGNU, Colo PR and KBCO I would have no access to any media anywhere.

18. I only listen on the drive to and from work.
In the morning, it's the news and traffic. In the afternoon, it's Hannity. I like to listen to his rants. And it keeps my blood pressure high. Occasionally, when I know he is outright lying, I send him an e-mail to remind him of what an idiot he is.

19. VOICETRACKING? AND, CAR TALK MUST GO
About three posts up, at the end of the post, someone mentioned

"voicetracking".
Please define for me/?
PS... Car Talk must be driven off the nearest cliff. It clogs up the NPR air when we all need Mozart piano sonatas... or other Baroqists.
Cartalk is a lowering of neural standards .. Harummphhh. LOL.

24. Radio Free America
Out here in Western Colorado we have 7 eclectic community public radio stations spread between Aspen and Durango. KOTO-Telluride, KSUT-Ignacio, KVNF-Paonia, KBUT-Crested Butte,KDNK-Carbondale,KSPN-Aspen, KAFM-Grand Junction Mostly music formatted they are volunteer driven with NPR and/or Pacifica affiliations.
Programs such as Democracy Now w/Amy Goodman, Counterspin, Alternative Radio, Making Contact, Jim Hightowers daily dose, and many locally produced opinion programs are the daily diet. Music will flow from jazz to rock to classical to hip hop sometimes seamlessly. We concider ourselves very lucky and the stations have trmendous community support. Most have been on the air for 20 years or more.
If you are out our way listen up to the left end of the dial.
For a sample check out www.kvnf.org.

25. Wisconsin Public Radio
A nice mix of state talk (6:00AM to 1:00PM and 3:00PM to 6:00PM), NPR (Morning Edition, Talk of the Nation, All Things Considered, On Point and The Connection) and classical music on two networks on weekdays. My favorite public radio show is On the Media, which is unfortunately broadcast from 6:00 - 7:00AM on Sundays here. I set my alarm to catch it!

I hate it. The one place you'd think would have a huge melange of good music doesn't. Clear Channel owns all the stations in the area and plays the same damn thing over and over and over and over and over again.

29. try KPFK - 90.7
for the news programs - best ones are on at 6AM, 9AM, 5PM and 6PM and then various timeslots throughout the week. Best thing to do is go to their website kpfk.org and check out the schedule. Some timeslots are programmed with shows that don't do a thing for me (they try to be all things to all people), but once you figure out the schedule, you know when to tune in to the programs that appeal to you.

always fun,

http://www.cbc.ca/asithappens/index.html

Listening to As It Happens is like taking a trip around the world five nights a week. Since 1968, using the simplest of tools - the telephone - this current affairs program has explored the heart of a story, whether it's happening in the streets of Belgrade or the kitchens of Paris.

at night Mike malloy 8 CST is great. But unfortunately it won't be on much longer because liberals can't operate at a loss. The owners, the U.A.W., is planning on pulling the plug. I have enjoyed it for months and its incredible to hear real liberal radio. I wish we liberals had the brains to organize like the f---- repubicans. We need to combine our funds to help create and support a propaganda machine.

I cannot afford a fancy satellite system for TV and regular cable is pretty much sanitized (except for C-span and PBS) sooooo, I listen to Radio like crazy! With online radio links, it's even better.
I live in SF bay area where I can listen to 3 or 4 mostly liberal talkshows. I'm thinking of buying a shortwave even. woot!
Listening to radio around here is how I found this website.
