American press is shameless: This is a sicko nation.
What has happened to the business of news? Tabloid news has become the "hard" news of the day. Jacko story has trumped the world news of war, death, corporate & governmental robbery.

3. you just noticed?
I can barely stand to turn on the TV. Let the courts decide about Michael. Why not focus on starvation, war, politics, charities, environment/weather...you know..things the news is supposed to cover? This is what happens with a for profit news channel. I have never been able to understand why no one has started a no nonsense news channel. It would probably have a lot of supporters and make good money. Hopefully this channel Gore is working on will be better.

4. look at the popularity of "reality" shows
why WOULDN'T they think that the American public has a voyeuristic, SICK, WARPED sense of what they want to see on TV ????? Apparently, watching people EAT WORMS is a f***ing FUN THING TO DO.

5. No... it's a JACKO nation!
Edited on Fri Nov-21-03 09:17 AM by alg0912
Why not create a cable channel that is ALL JACKO, ALL THE TIME? The Jacko Channel - your one-stop shop for all things JACKO!

Can you hear Sting saying "I want my Jacko-TV!" A Dire Straits song could follow...

<on edit> Saying "JACKO" so much makes me miss Jackie O...

12. I thought we had all-Jacko T.V
It's called MSNBC. There is no real news anymore. Hasn't been for some time. It's all infotainment. A shoveling of candy coated propaganda to manipulate the public. It's People magazine and USA Today all rolled into a slick graphic package with cute little buzzphrases. You have to go underground to get the real news anymore.

6. Look, the TV "News" ain't ABOUT to change
24/7 Jacko is money in the bank for the Whore Nets. We would have better luck getting the needle away from 100,000 junkies than we would getting the Media Borg to cover anything of real importance, given the fact that Michael may do Serious Time. (BTW, he's toast regardless of whether he's sent to a men's or a women's prison.)

Give up on the idea of getting Real News from TV. Send the "News" nets an email telling them you are simply not going to watch anymore--then get your facts from the Internet. LBN right here at DU is the best place I can think of. Use your TV for entertainment purposes only; you will be much happier!

7. They put him on the jumbo tron...
at the hockey game last night as a part of the 'news'. There was a loud cheer when he was shown being escorted to jail in handcuffs. I didn't feel like cheering--not because I'm sympathetic to Jackson. I just think it's Springerish to cheer about something like this.

I agree that there are phenominally more important news stories that should be covered, but Americans seem to be more interested in tabloid gossip than in real news, so this type of stuff is what we will be saturated with.

10. Read some Noam Chomsky - It's Part of Keeping the Rubes Distracted

This flood of tabloidish news is critical to the clandestine undermining of our democratic institutions. Its a simple matter of diversion - like the street magician with the walnut shells and the marble.

Keep the people busy watching mindless tripe like "Friends" or "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire" or tabloid news about Michael Jackson or Laci Peterson and the people don't focus on important issues like the gutting of environmental protections, holding prisoners without due process and stolen elections in Florida.
