Google again censors ads for http://www.WhiteRoseSociety.org/
Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 04:21 PM by benburch
Hey, folks!

You may remember a few months ago when Google decided to stop serving paid ads for the http://www.WhiteRoseSociety.org/ web page. At the time, the phrase they objected to was "Impeach Bush" which was in the site's keywords. Well, yesterday, I edited the site to include the text

No matter what the RNC says, we here at The White Rose Society still believe that George W. Bush is a Fascist.

Well, lo and behold, less than 24 hours later I received the following note from Google Adwords;

Hello David,

Thank you for advertising with Google AdWords. After reviewing your
account, I have found that one or more of your ads or keywords does not
meet our guidelines. The results are outlined in the report below.

----------------------------------------------
Campaign: 'Campaign #1,' Ad Group: 'White Rose Society Website'
----------------------------------------------

AD TEXT:

Liberal Talk Radio Lives
Liberal/Progressive Talk Radio
audio archives. 24/7, MP3 format
www.WhiteRoseSociety.org

Action taken: Suspended - Pending Revision
Issue(s): Unacceptable Content
~~~~~~~~~
AD TEXT:
The Antidote to Rush
Liberal/Progressive Talk Radio
audio archives. 24/7, MP3 format
www.WhiteRoseSociety.org
Action taken: Suspended - Pending Revision
Issue(s): Unacceptable Content
~~~~~~~~~
SUGGESTIONS:
-> Content: At this time, Google policy does not permit the
advertisement of websites that contain "language that advocates against
an individual, group or organization", "language that advocates against
an individual, group or organization". As noted in our advertising
terms and conditions, we reserve the right to exercise editorial
discretion when it comes to the advertising we accept on our site.

---------------------
Please read below for definitions of the issues I found:

Unacceptable Content: Google believes strongly in freedom of expression
and therefore offers broad access to content across the web without
censoring search results. Please note that the decisions we make
concerning advertising in no way affect the search results we deliver.

---------------------

If a keyword has been disapproved, your ad(s) will no longer be
displayed for searches on this keyword.

If an ad has been suspended, please edit it based on our suggestions,
and then save your changes to automatically resubmit the ad for review.
We're confident that these changes will improve your ad performance and
increase your return on investment.

Our goal is to help you reach your target audience and maximize your
investment. All ads are reviewed by AdWords Specialists to ensure that
our advertisers create successful, high-impact advertising in keeping
with our program's Editorial Guidelines.

For more information about our ad requirements, please read the AdWords
Editorial Guidelines at:

Please feel free to email us at adwords-support@google.com if you have
any further questions or concerns. We look forward to providing you
with the most effective advertising available.

Sincerely,

The Google AdWords Team

SO... What should I do? Edit out my heartfealt opinion that GWB is indeed a fascist and do without the power of advertising? Or leave it in with the understanding that about 25 people a day who might have found the liberal talk radio archives will now not find it?

I would love to hear your opinions in this matter.

1. What if
1. you put spaces between the letters: F A S C I S T
it seems to me that this wouldn't show up as a word on Google's search engine

2. why not make the word "fascist" a graphic rather than text?

3. have another site that only has the word "fascist" about a million times, and when a viewer clicks on it they're redirected to your real site.

I don't know much about how Google works, so these suggestions are definitely FWIW.

2. I don't think spelling it out would work
If an ad has been suspended, please edit it based on our suggestions,
and then save your changes to automatically resubmit the ad for review.

6. Agree with this technique
That way you can have all the keywords you want on the same page - Bush, nazi, fascist. Just don't specifically say that "we think bush is a fascist." Also throw in some keywords on protest, free speech etc. Whatever best describes what you are FOR.

5. I don't think it's a person behind the curtain
Maybe if you put a graphic file on your site, you could avoid the content problem. The image could be the word "fascist" or anything else and their bots wouldn't figure it out.

7. Maybe it's time to report all of the right wing sites?

This is has a Google Ad:

bumperbanner.com/gop/banners.php?sortby=red_stamp

Search for "NewsMax" on Google and you'll see their ad on the right side.

If Google loses a lot of ads by censorship, maybe they will change their policy?

8. Well, I suspect...
... that the only reason that Google ever knows about anything on my site is because some neocon winger complains to them about it.

So, if you want to start complaining about ads for neocon sites, have at it!

Bear in mind that the first time they dumped my ads was because I had "Impeach Bush" in my keywords. So, any negative action verb associated with a personality on the left should be fair game for a complaint...
