Half a dozen protesters picketed outside a downtown Burger King yesterday in support of workers fired from the fast food chain's restaurants in Honduras. The protest, organized in Winnipeg by an anti-sweatshop group, coincided with similar events in 15 U.S. cities.
"There are workers all over the world who have been treated badly and workers want to stand in solidarity with each other," said Jennifer deGroot of No Sweat Manitoba.
DeGroot said at least 27 employees -- many of them single mothers -- were abruptly fired last year from Burger King, Church's Chicken and Little Caesar's restaurants in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa after rumours circulated the employees were organizing to demand better working conditions.
The restaurants belong to the same corporate chain. DeGroot claimed the workers were fired without cause or notice and did not receive severance packages. <snip>
