perhaps largest of co-ops, in Basque region of spain, shows what can be done. Mondragon is its name.
42,OOO workers, 4.8 billion in sales.
43 schools and a college
make auto parts, appliances, do insurance, etc etc etc
5 billion in financial assets.
in McPherson Kansas, a co-op owns a refinery... since WW2. They do rural electric .. huge electric plants... banking = Credit Unions
they are popular in Sweden.

I was on the board of this place as an undergraduate: http://ishicoop.org/There was a national student housing co-op organization called NASCO that was very active out of Ann Arbor: http://www.nasco.coop/
