Easy Come, Easy Go
Yes, I expect to get a bit of heat because of the source of this column and because the author, Gary North, is a total gold bug who never saw a government he liked. However, if you have time to read the link, it may give you an alternative idea concerning where the US economy might be heading. Scary stuff.

..snip..

Empires are noted for military strength at the beginning and fiscal weakness at the end. The military budget grows as a percentage of the total budget.

This will not be true of the American empire. The expenses of the welfare system for the aged will swamp the military budget long before there is a significant military threat to the United States. The fall of the American empire will be fiscal, as the fall of every empire is. But foreign occupation costs, military recruitment costs, and weapons costs will not be the collective cause. The unfunded liabilities of actuarially unfulfillable political promises will be.

..snip..

3. And if I were standing on the curb...
... and Rush shouted at me to get out of the way because a taxi was out of control and headed straight toward me, being as it's Rush that's doing the yelling I'd just ignore him and ... (crash!) ... die.

2. Bloody Hell!
It's not the welfare to poor people, aged or otherwise, that's swamping things, it's the corporate welfare! Furthermore, the biggest non-corporate welfare on the books is the tax break on mortgage loans...........and maybe the farm subsidies as well, but that doesn't really go to individuals anymore
