Unbelievable. A long list of companies that might not survive.
Here's the list of 283 troubled companies from Moody's via Robwire.

The list is startling. Can you spot a few that surprise you, or your distressed about, or whom you do business? Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) worries me. First, because it's the only real competition with Intel. Second because I run a box with an AMD processor. If it dies, they should break up Intel.

The others that startle or concern me include Sirius XM Radio, Charter Communications, Clearwire Communications, Barneys New York, Culligan, Dole Food, and that's just a few.

It is really surprising how many broadcast and communications companies are on the list. Newspapers I could believe, but broadcast? It confirms what many of us already know: this crisis is going to completely change the business landscape of the whole country, which is going to change our lives:

3. Yes, you would think casinos would be recession-proof, right?

But the problem is, Las Vegas is dying. Casinos are to be found everywhere now, and Las Vegas hotels, and everything else there, is overpriced. Without its glitz and casinos, Vegas is nothing but a desert.

Prediction: in 10 years Las Vegas will be a ghost town. Fifteen tops.

14. Naw - the state will just do what it did in the 1930s . . .
only this time, instead of legalizing gambling (1931) and making divorce simple (remember the divorce ranches?), we'll just legalize same-sex marriage, legalize marijuana, and legalize brothel prostitution across the board (instead of just the more rural areas).

While the rest of the country falls in thrall to the neo-Puritans who want to get rid of no-fault divorce, demonize same-sex marriage, toss all the doobie-smokers into prison, and keep prostitution illegal because that gives them more of a thrill when they sneak out for a little 'pay for play' after church - Nevada will embrace all that is 'wicked' . . . and make a killing.

18. None of that will bring in the revenue that gambling was.

And none of that is guaranteed to be confined to Las Vegas or even Nevada. Puritanism is breaking down. I'm sorry, I think your screwed.

22. No, but if the problem is that people are gambling elsewhere...
...legalizing marijuana would change a whole lot of peoples' destination, which will then result in them gambling there instead of in Atlantic City or something. Amsterdam gets a lot of American tourists for a reason.

19. But the things you mention are part of mainstream culture now.
It doesn't take much effort to find drugs and sex. In fact, sometimes getting away from "vices" seems harder. Maybe Vegas can re-invent itself as the Puritan escape from oversexed, over-medicated American culture.

2. Advaced Micro Devices isnt going anywhere
They have the underwriting of an Abu Dahbi government owned development company behind them.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has closed a deal with Advanced Technology Investment Co. and Mubadala Development Co. of Abu Dhabi.

The agreement creates The Foundry Co., a company that plans to build a $4.6 billion chip fab in the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta, N.Y. The new company also takes over AMD’s two manufacturing plants in Dresden, Germany.

AMD (NYSE: AMD) of Sunnyvale., Calif. on March 2 received $700 million from ATIC for 65.8 percent interest in The Foundry Co. The new company also assumed responsibility for $1.1 billion of AMD’s debt.

AMD in most generations, beat Intel in quality, which seems to be the best kept secret in the computer business.

25. My take on it is this:

It is known that repealing of some important laws and regulations allowed some speculative schemes called Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDOs) to run rampant through the economy. None of it was regulated. Since no one was counting we don't know how many of these there really are. It is estimated that there are hundreds of trillions of dollars of these out there.

You know that these things were created from mortgages, but more was done than that. They would make one CDO bond for a mortgage and then another CDO from the CDO. Then they'd insure the CDO and then they'd sell a CDO based on the insurance policy. They way they sliced them up and put them into the CDOs, none of them had a complete mortgage payment-- like one would be for years 2-3 of the mortgage payment, along with other couple of years from some mortgage.

So, they did was they set up a whole bunch of dominoes ready to fall when the housing market crashed.

Since outside of the sub-prime market consumers had borrowed against their houses and were otherwise in debt, the fall in housing prices knocked down three pillars in the economy simultaneously: housing, finance and consumer spending. Those are all flat on their back at once.

Then there's retail: ever wonder why retailers would pay the 2.5 percent fee to credit card companies for having customers use their cards? Because the extra spending consumers did with credit cards created extra sales, which allowed stores to keep their prices much higher than they would have been if consumers were buying only on a cash payment. Consumer credit is over-extended anyway, but with the crisis, many consumers for one reason or another are losing access to credit, or they want to cut back on their use of credit. The results are that prices at retail are barely resisting deflation. You want to know one reason Bernanke is pouring so much cash into the system? To maintain or to slow a huge price crash at retail. Hyperinflation might sound bad, but deflation is just as bad. You should begin to worry, though, when the Fed is printing a few billion dollars a minute and prices still fall. I couldn't help notice that with all that liquidity Bernanke is desperately pouring in, inflation was just at a 0.1 rate last month. If it's that low or negative on the next report, the signs are serious.

The point, however, is that retail is also on the brink of a collapse. Meanwhile, mortgages on places like shopping malls and hotels are probably going to have their own mortgage prices.

The possible results? If retail and commercial businesses start to fold in high numbers, the suburbs we all see are going to dry up and die. Commercial businesses actually are the lifeblood of a suburbs tax base. Services to the burbs can't be maintained.

Now, that's only part of what I foresee-- a bunch of dominoes falling. I have not even come to unemployment. And I'm afraid I'm too tired to continue. I will just have to point out: the entire economy looks like it has been undermined to me. It's not a garden-variety recession. It's a structural problem, and it's worldwide.

The people who did this should be put in prison, forever.

and alas, their sugar daddies have deep pockets.

The only surprise on this list is Ford. Their foreign divisions should be enough to hold them together while their inventory of Stupid Useless Vehicles is eating them alive here.

They're one of the fronts for the Republican propaganda machine, and possibly created by Jack Abramoff himself, who came up with all kinds of things like that.

16. There is a HUGE difference between a company that MIGHT default...
on it's debt and one that "might not survive".

While many or even most of those companies may be in serious trouble, it does not necessarily mean that they are on the brink of going out of business.

Ford, Dole and Chiquita brands for instance, have had their bonds downgraded quite a long time ago but it doesn't mean they are either on the brink of defaulting or that they are going to shut the doors.

20. Finlay Fine Jewelry Corp. is a RIPOFF.
I worked for them in a leased dept. at a dept. store.
They run jewelry depts in stores like Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and such.

They sell "fish gravel". The stuff is not worth carrying out of the store. It should all die and come back as diamond grinding wheels. Seriously.

I have a GIA diploma in Diamond Grading and Colored Stone Grading.

Crud marked up 3 times to retail, and people who buy jewelry at the mall and don't know any better buy it.

Besides, one of the worst managers I ever had, was there. She yelled and screamed at me behind the counter -- in the store, where customers could have been -- however the store was empty -- and then yelled at me to STOP CRYING!!! which I could not do.

Pitiful excuse for a manager.

Retail jewelry is a ripoff. People don't know what they are buying.

Yeah, I believe that.
Theyjust suddenly stopped publishing one of their magazines.
And best yet, they contracted with Rick Warren to produce his books and tapes, which is why their magazines had a high cancellation rate. HIs inserts are in the damn magazines.
I so hope he is the reason they may not make it....how ironic.
