Car Insurance: Think I recently read about lower rates for people who |
|
drive their cars less than four hours a day. Is it official?

1. Wouldn't just about everybody drive less than 4 hours per day? |
|
Except the few who are traveling salesmen or have ridiculously long (2 hours each way) commutes?
We don't even drive our car 4 hours per week.

That's a cutoff for you? Are you a cab driver?
Most insurance looks at how many miles you drive, since by definition the more you use your car the more likely you are to have a claim.

5. Rates are already based on how much you use your car - |
|
- those who don't drive to/from work pay less than those who do. Those who drive to work pay less than those who use their cars in their business. I'm guessing that the great majority of the people drive LESS than 4 hours a day.

6. Progressive Auto Insurance |
|
offers up to a 50% discount if you allow them to install a GPS device that tracks your speed, driving time, distance and "other factors". You have to pay $30 for the initial install to be done by a certified mechanic of their choosing. The actual discount varies with the data collected. Did I fall for it? NO way! Big brother is not getting any help from me on this one.

7. I didn't know about that |
|
I'd go for it. I only use my car to get from home to work and back, maybe a bit of grocery shopping along the way.
At some point, when we all have electric vehicles, the government will use the "smart grid" to download your mileage, so they can charge you taxes for using the roads, since you won't be buying taxed gasoline anymore. Big Brother's on the way whether we like it or not.

It's for driving less than a certain number of miles a year--might be 5000, I'm not sure.

9. It goes by miles for me. Years ago I was charged much less for a 2nd car |
|
My agent said, "yeah, you can't drive 2 at a time can you?"
Made sense. Those days are gone.
