Bush Touts Proposal to Cut Back on Gas (at visit to Alabama nuclear power plant)

President Bush touted his approach for cutting gasoline consumption Thursday, highlighting differences with Democrats as the Senate debated their proposals.

The legislation contains provisions Bush likes, and many he doesn't. But, from a nuclear power plant in Alabama, he took a more gentle than pointed tack toward the Democratic majority controlling debate on the bill, even though at least one piece has attracted a White House veto threat.

"I urge the Congress to be realistic about the bills they're talking about and get it done," Bush told about 200 employees of the Tennessee Valley Authority's newly reopened Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.

The president's voice repeatedly cracked, and grew more hoarse as he spoke. He promised to keep his remarks short to prevent folks from passing out in the steamy room, and made a joke about how hard it had been to haul his 60-year-old body up the stairs to the plant's control room.
