1928

2004

A combination photograph shows a historic image taken in 1928 (top) of the Upsala Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina, contrasted with a 2004 photograph (bottom) with a similar view of the Glacier. The pictures illustrate the extent to which climate change has caused the ice to melt away this century. Greenpeace campaigner Joris Thijssen, said: 'Rising temperatures are causing glaciers to melt all over the world. Here in Patagonia, they are disappearing at a rate of 42 cubic kilometers every year - faster than anywhere else on Earth. In both (1928 AND 2004) the composition is made from three separate viewpoints to form a panoramic image. (Greenpeace/Beltra *COMPOSITE IMAGE* GREENPEACE HANDOUT- OK FOR ONLINE REPRO)

1. Greenpeace is partially the cause for this horror.
Greenpeace seems to think that by simply posting a picture they can avoid responsibility for this incredible disaster that is befalling the planet. To their rather esoteric and elitist sensibilities the only form of energy that is acceptable is PV cells, windmills and burning biomass until our throats fall out from the smoke.

In particular, to speak as I predictably do, Greenpeace is one of the premier mindless knee jerk anti-nuclear organizations on the planet. As I repeat over and over again, because it happens to be true, to speak of minimizing the huge (as in vast, as in possibly fatal, as in incredible) risk of the greenhouse effect without the immediate large scale expansion of nuclear power is completely absurd.

As much as we might wishfully think of Greenpeace's "solutions" to this matter, as much as we might sweep the real and serious risks of these proposals because they are cute and have the words "solar" and the syllable "bio" in them, they are not scalable to anywhere near the required level without the execution of a large portion of the existing human population.

The melting of glaciers and the general collapse of the atmosphere are very serious affairs, and they urgently need to be addressed, with the stress on the word "urgently" magnified to the nth degree. It is fine, maybe even wise, to speak of population control (without war, famine, or other ethically unsuitable means) and renewable energy in a more ideal future. However we don't have a lot of time to dick around. The picture is graphic.

2. another

`Africa’s “Shining Mountain” may soon shine no more. The snow and ice on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is melting so fast that some scientists believe its ice cap could be gone by the year 2015. The ice cap formed more than 11,000 years ago. Researchers say the ice fields on Africa’s highest mountain shrank by 80 percent over the past century.'
