Citizens tout benefits of 'small wind' ordinance to reduce home energy bills

Could an energy saving wind be blowing in Mohave County? A number of residents asked the Mohave County Planning and Zoning Commission to consider adding a "small wind" ordinance to the county's list during the commission's Call to the Public on Wednesday.

Scott Travis and Andy Kruse are behind the drive to bring small residential wind turbines to Mohave County. The two asked if they could give a presentation on the subject to the commission during the Call to the Public. Commission Chairman Earl Hamlyn declined the offer and asked the group to get with P&Z staff some time before the next commission meeting and see if they could get their topic on the next agenda.

Bullhead City resident Helen Howard, who spoke in support of the idea during the Call to the Public, said the electric bill for her business in the city has been more than $500 for the past five months, and her home utility bill was more than $250 for the last five months.

"I know it's hot in Arizona. I've lived here a long time but think this is pretty much something I really don't want to continue to do (pay high electricity bills)," she said.

She said she is planning to buy a house in the county and is looking at using both solar and wind energy to power it. And she asked that the commission have staff look at creating an ordinance that would allow and encourage the use of small residential wind turbines in the county.
