Greens Accuse John Howard Of "Extreme Negligence" On Climate

Greens leader Bob Brown has accused Prime Minister John Howard of leading Australia into a climate change catastrophe. The Greens have launched a Six Step Climate Change Action Plan, which sets out policies that the party says would see Australia play a leading role in fighting global warming.

The Greens' action plan follows the release a new report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warns of more heat waves, melting glaciers and rising sea levels unless immediate action is taken.

The report says the planet is on the verge of an environmental catastrophe and millions of people could be affected by rising temperatures.

Senator Brown says the Liberal Party pledged to cut carbon emissions by 20 per cent in 1990 but Mr Howard scrapped that policy when he took over the party leadership. "This is extreme negligence by John Howard," he said. "These are very serious times for humanity on the planet."
