Spanish PM Pledges To Join "Front Line" Of Climate Fight (Spain's GHG Output Up 3.6% In 2005 Alone)

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Tuesday that Spain, which has one of the worst records in the EU on greenhouse-gas emissions, now wants to take a leading role in the fight against global warming.

"The fight against climate change is an absolute priority of any responsible government today and we have no time to lose," he said at the inauguration of a solar energy plant at government headquarters. The prime minister said he was "firmly committed" to putting Spain "in the front line" in this fight.

Spain, like the European Union as whole, would "do its utmost" at next week's UN global warming conference in Bali, Indonesia, Zapatero said.

EDIT

This is the case in Spain, where emissions rose a whopping 3.6 percent in 2005, according to figures released in June by the European Environment Agency. Spain's annual pollution is now 53.5 percent more than in 1990 -- the year of reference for pledges under Kyoto.
