BERLIN – The existing network of pipes that once connected the pulp mill here and the paper mill in Gorham would be put back into use, following an agreement reached between the biomass plant developer and the paper company.

Laidlaw Energy earlier this year proposed developing a 60 megawatt biomass-to-energy plant on the site of the former pulp mill that had been owned by Fraser Papers. Fraser continues to operate a paper mill in neighboring Gorham. It expects to close on its acquisition of the boiler, the only stack standing in Berlin, and the former mill site.

Under a memo of understanding reached between the two companies this week, Laidlaw would recover heat from the biomass plant that would otherwise be lost and use it to provide hot water to Fraser for use at the paper mill.

"It just makes so much sense," said Laidlaw president and CEO Michael Bartoszek. "The infrastructure is already there and, by incorporating this element into our project and making it a combined heat and power project, it will greatly increase the overall efficiency of the plant. It's a clear win-win situation."
