Daily Telegraph: Join our fight to save the whales
Join our fight to save the whales

A DEFIANT swim in a sea of blood propelled Isabel Lucas from the set of Home and Away to Japan's most wanted list.

Back on our shores, the former Summer Bay starlet has joined The Daily Telegraph to save the whales, signing our petition urging the Japanese to drop their primitive policy.

Japanese whalers are on route to kill more than 1000 fin, minke and humpback whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, with the Greenpeace ship The Esperanza hot on the convoy's heels.

While the game of cat and mouse plays out in Antarctic waters, closer to home the former Home and Away star has become one of the first to put her name to The Daily Telegraph petition - urging others to do the same.

Created in consultation with Greenpeace, the petition aims to show the Japanese people the intensity of feeling in Australia about hunting and killing these marine mammals.

Embracing a strategic shift in the fight against illegal whaling, the petition aims to change attitudes within Japan, after it was discovered many Japanese people had no knowledge of their government's brutal and unnecessary practise.

Polling in Japan found while 69 per cent of Japanese people opposed whaling, most were unaware of the reality of Japanese whaling conduct.

Ninety-two per cent of Japanese did not know Japan whaled in the Southern Ocean Whaling Sanctuary and 91 per cent did not know their government funded the whaling program.
