New York state says nuke plant kills too many fish
New York state says nuke plant's cooling system has environmental impact by killing fish
August 25, 2008: 03:21 PM EST

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - The huge numbers of fish sucked to their death by the cooling system at the Indian Point nuclear plant prove that the system harms the Hudson River environment, a New York state official has ruled.

The finding by J. Jared Snyder, assistant commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation, is a victory for plant critics who claim that up to 1.2 billion fish and eggs are killed each year as the plant continuously draws in river water for use as a coolant.

"For decades, Indian Point has maintained that its cooling systems have no impact on Hudson River fish," said Robert Goldstein, general counsel to the environmental group Riverkeeper. "At long last, the DEC has pout an end to this fiction."

Snyder said that even the lowest estimate of fish deaths _ 900,000 annually _ "represents excessive fish kills" and establishes an adverse environmental impact.

2. Nah, just point out that coal, oil etc. use just as much water.
Steam turbines require cooling, be they in a nuke plant or the USS Arizona.

5. Good point - wind and solar don't need water for cooling!

Thanks!
Let's get rid of nukes and coal,
they are both bad for the environment!

8. Solar uses a LOT of water
for cleaning the mirrors or panels.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

9. Dagnabit. Time to call Mom and tell her to climb up on the roof with a bucket and brush...
those panels have gone unwashed for over six years. It's a wonder they work at all, let alone fully charge the batteries by 1:00 p.m. most days.

13. So where do you think NY should put it's wind and solar facilities?
The proposed Solana solar farm in Arizona will produce 280 megawatts of electricity and take up 1,900 acres (2.97 square miles). Arizona gets more sunlight then NY State. I grew up on Long Island, NY. They don't call it Sunny Long Island for nothing. Now that I think about it, they don't call it Sunny Long Island at all.

Indian Creek produced an average of 1,825 megawatts in 2003.
Fitzpatrick produced an average of 795 megawatts in 2003.
Nine Mile Point produced an average of 1,461 megawatts in 2003.
Robert E. Ginna produced an average of 492 megawatts in 2003.

That's a total of 4,573 megawatts. It would take 16 Solana type plants assuming (incorrectly) that they would be as efficient in New York as in Arizona. What do you think will be the environmental impact covering up about 48 square miles of land with these plants?

Then there is coal:
Replacing coal isn't nearly so bad. It will only take about 23 square miles.

I can go on if you want.
Natural gas 33 square miles.
Residual fuel 24 square miles.
Distillate fuel 1 square miles.
Petroleum Coke 1 square miles.
Biomass 5 square miles.

While we're at it maybe we should eliminate those pesky Hydro Electric plants. They've got to be hurting the little fishes. That's another 28 square miles.

Thats about 163 square miles of land.
