Virginia Government Posts Stricter Warnings On Chesapeake Stripers
EDIT

Under the new standards, the state recommends eating no more than two servings of Chesapeake Bay striper a month. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and young children should avoid eating the fish entirely.

The problem is an insidious industrial concoction called PCBs , or polychlorinated biphenyls . Long-term exposure to PCBs can affect neurological development in children, may increase the risk of developing cancer and could suppress the immune system.

The levels of PCBs have not increased in Virginia’s fisheries, according to Khizar Wasti , director of the Division of Health Hazards Control with the state health department.

EDIT

Spread your consumption to various watersheds, since levels in the bass vary by locations. nEat smaller fish because they are younger and have not accumulated as many PCBs in their fatty tissues. Discard the skin and fatty flesh, since that’s where the PCBs are concentrated. And broil, bake or grill your catch rather than frying it, so you can pour off PCBs-laden grease. Deep-frying seals the chemicals into the meat."
