(Kill-A-Watt) Energy detectors in demand at libraries (Maine)
http://www.sunjournal.com/story/298561-3/Franklin/Energy_detectors_in_demand_at_libraries/

FARMINGTON - New Kill-A-Watt Energy Detector kits circulated by libraries statewide are in hot demand.

Melanie Taylor Coombs, librarian at the Farmington Public Library, wasn't sure what the demand for the kits would be, but after just receiving four kits Friday, Coombs already has a waiting list of patrons who want to take the kit out on loan.

Efficiency Maine, a program of the Maine Public Utilities Commission, is sending 660 Kill-A-Watt monitors to 200 libraries throughout the state for patrons to sign out along with the latest best sellers.

"Libraries do this type of thing really well," Coombs said. "We're accessible to the public and an inexpensive way to get as many out to as many people as we can. We also have the ability to track units."

4. I keep mine loaned out most of the time now
It done for us what we wanted which was to see where the money was going. For instance you can compare how much it cost to run the refrigerator at different settings. It is the best tool going for helping one to see what is using all them killywatts.

6. So let's see if I got this right. People drive in their CARS to get a "Kill a Watt" device

to determine whether their new 50 inch television in their new Maine Solar House-like McMansion (with South facing 14 meter super efficient windows) burns 1200 watts or 1150 watts?

Of course, one could calculate how many thousands of hours one would need to run the "energy-star" big screen TV's (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/1/8/185552/4950">I actually did a similar calculation with a light bulb) but that would require valuing reality over self-congratulation, and let's be clear, if all the self-congratulatory yuppies had to recognize the implications of their consumption, their little yuppie heads would explode.

Isn't it better to simply "solve" climate change by bad-mouthing poor people in India and China on the internet, um, for wanting to live like people who can drive to the library for a "Kill-O-Watt loan."

I'll bet for the price of three gallons of gasoline one could buy such a device.
