Antarctica is warming, not cooling: study

ROTHERA BASE, Antarctica (Reuters) - Antarctica is
getting warmer rather than cooling as widely believed,
according to a study that fits the icy continent into
a trend of global warming.

A review by U.S. scientists of satellite and weather
records for Antarctica, which contains 90 percent of
the world's ice and would raise world sea levels if it
thaws, showed that freezing temperatures had risen by
about 0.5 Celsius (0.8 Fahrenheit) since the 1950s.

"The thing you hear all the time is that Antarctica is
cooling and that's not the case," said Eric Steig of the
University of Washington in Seattle, lead author of the
study in Thursday's edition of the journal Nature.

Skeptics about man-made global warming have in the
past used reports of a cooling of Antarctica as evidence
to back their view that warming is a myth.

PARIS (AFP) — Scientists on Wednesday unveiled
evidence to suggest global warming is affecting all
of Antarctica, home to the world's mightiest store
of ice.

The average temperature across the White Continent
has been rising for the last half century and the
finger of blame points at the greenhouse effect,
they said.

The research, published in the British journal Nature,
takes a fresh look at one of the great unknowns --
and dreads -- in climate science.

Previous monitoring has already pinpointed the
Antarctic Peninsula -- the tongue that juts 800
kilometres (500 miles) towards South America -- as
a "hotspot" where hundreds of glaciers have been
in retreat since the start of the decade.

But until now the news has been reassuring regarding
Antarctica's two massive icesheets.

All Things Considered, January 21, 2009 · Antarctica was seemingly the only continent on Earth that had not been warming up, as far as scientists could tell. But now a new study finds that large parts of the southern continent have in fact been getting warmer.

Researchers are particularly interested in Antarctica's fate because the coastlines of the world would be obliterated if Antarctic ice melted away and raised global sea level.

The continent is so remote, scientists didn't put permanent weather stations there until 1957 — and even those were in just a few scattered places. Eric Steig at the University of Washington says that made it hard to take the continent's temperature.

"It's like having data in San Francisco and New York and trying to say something about Arizona," says Steig. "You really need some more information if you're going to say anything reasonable about Arizona."

Actually, I've talked to many of them and they're plug stupid to a one.

6. It's not just

stupidity. It's denial. Ignore it and it won't exist. It's a common american stupidity, waste is ok, nothing wrong with wasting gas, or electricity, etc. The ocean is so big you can throw all your trash in there, and it won't matter.
In the 1950's the book was "The Ugly American", it was a film also, I think.
It's a problem in other countries too, but where you have less, you tend to waste less.
