1. Are ther any American owned Breweries anymore?
I mean the big boys.
Since even american beers are owned by foreigners, then yes it must be time for Wally to sell beer.

3. I'm talking about 6 packs.
Oils going down. Beer should be going down. I heard about the hops prices last year but gas prices are down so the delivery guys ought to be sucking up.

Thanks!

And one anti-recommendation:

http://www.leinie.com/av.html

Their Berry Weiss is clawingly sweet; it tastes exactly like soda pop.

11. While you're talking about PA breweries, let's not forget America's oldest, Yeungling

Yeungling brews a good product, which they sell for a reasonable price. However, I'm fonder of Weyerbacher http://www.weyerbacher.com/ (which http://www.weyerbacher.com/cwo.php?id=8&id2=&id3=&page_id=37">I see is now available in Ohio.)

We have seriously given up drinking beer that is made by none American companies. We actually got our grocery store to carry Straub and now the college kids are fighting us for it. How funny is that. Thanks for the heads up. peace,Kim

16. It's a shame really

They demonstrated that a large scale American brewery could actually produce a good product.

If you like Belgian Ale, consider an http://www.ommegang.com/">Ommegang! brewed in Cooperstown, NY.

I'm a big fan of the http://www.cooperstownbrewing.com/">Cooperstown Brewing Company (which is actually in Milford, but nobody's heard of Milford.) They're not foolish enough to brew a Belgian Ale, but they have a very tasty (and reasonably priced) line of beer.

As an added bonus, their labels soak off really easily, so I like to use their bottles to make "home brew."

I agree the Chocolate Indulgence is very good. I'm also quite fond of their Rare Vos.

Based on your description of Chocolate Indulgence as "Ultra Guinness" may I recommend, the http://www.brooklynbrewery.com/">Brooklyn Brewery's Black Chocolate Stout? (It's a seasonal brew, an "Imperial Stout." Despite the name, brewed in Utica, NY. I buy it by the case in season.)

For an everyday great drinking beer I heartily recommend their Lager.

Of course I am a huge fan of their Porter and their Black & Tan too.

I used to be a great fan of their porter. However, it seemed to me that with the building of their new facility, its taste changed. Maybe I'm just getting older porter than I used to (my old source dried up during their growth spurt. At that time, they temporarily stopped shipping to New York. When they resumed shipping, my old source did not resume carrying it.)

Brewed in Utica New York, in the old Matts Brewery! Good beer, at a reasonable price:

17. This is an issue that might actually drive the American working class into the streets.
It's not foreclosures or job loss or the defunding of pensions. It's beer. Here's to the great American beer riots! A catalyst for change.

19. The two key motivators of the American public
I've said for years, in this forum no less, that the only two things that can drive the majority of Americans to engage in political activity, are:

1.- The price of gas.

2.- The price of a six-pack of beer.

22. And the best beer in the world is about to get a bit more expensive
(We can thank those who "compromised" federal revenue sharing for the states out of the stimulus bill for that....

Oregon revenue hunt comes to a head: beer

With cuts looming in social services and not enough money for health care, lawmakers in Salem are eyeing the frosty winter ale in Keith McCowan's pint as a possible revenue godsend.

The state tax on beer is less than a penny a glass. It's among the lowest in the country, untouched in more than three decades and guarded by powerful interest groups.

McCowan, a 33-year-old city stormwater employee enjoying a Widmer Brothers Brrr at a brewpub last week, wants to keep it that way.

"I don't think it's fair they're singling out people who drink beer or smoke or chew, and letting everybody else skate by," he says.

"Why are they making us pay extra ... just because we like beer, but they're not doing it with people who buy diapers and groceries? Put it on vegetables, man."

Never before, it seems, has the climate been so ripe to raise taxes on sin. Democrats command supermajorities in both chambers, which means they can increase taxes without Republican votes.

Gov. Ted Kulongoski is pushing higher cigarette taxes for health care this session. And a handful of Democrats would like to fill a hole in drug and alcohol addiction services with a beer tax increase.

But lawmakers eager to raise the price of drinking and smoking have their work cut out for them. The opposition they face includes two of the most influential and experienced lobbyists in the Capitol: Paul Romain, the lobbyist for the Oregon Beer and Wine Distributors Association, and Mark Nelson, who represents deep-pocketed tobacco maker Reynolds American and beer king Anheuser-Busch.

23. May I suggest home brewing?
It's fun, and (if you don't cheap out on the ingredients) you can brew some very tasty beer at very competitive prices. I'm a bit of a beer snob, but my stuff meets or exceeds my expectations of high-end beers. (I can't take too much credit though, mostly, I use other people's recipes.) Figure 2 cases/batch at a cost of $20-$50 (depending on the recipe.)

If you don't have a home brew supply store in your town, I recommend "http://morebeer.com">Beer, Beer & More Beer." Their kits are just about fool proof.

26. I'm going to have to learn how to do that
Good ale is hard to find down under- and it's expensive. The only thing that comes close to Oregon microbrew is Baron's wattleseed ale- and that gets old after a while!

27. If you can follow a recipe, you can home brew
OK, so you need a few tools, but you can buy everything you need for the cost of a couple of cases of good beer. I rationed myself, (let's see, how much would I have paid for this beer? how much did I pay? the difference I can spend on brewing toys.) My latest acquisition? a couple of strip thermometers to stick onto the sides of my carboys. Yeah!)
