If I had a MONSTER burn pile last year
do I want to plant this year's veggies on the burned spot or NOT on the burned spot? :shrug:

1. I would suggest a pH test on that area

All the ashes may have rendered the soil in that area more alkaline.

The appropriate range for almost all plants is slightly acid - pH 5.5 to 6.5 or so. Very few can tolerate a pH past 8, which is fairly alkaline.

And the whole "occurs on flood plains" thing?

There hasn't been a flood here since 1945. I don't know what the hell this commie NRCS is trying to pull.
