What's with the quakes near Kodiak Island? |
|
They started yesterday and are now occurring at frequent intervals, over ten in the last two hours. There were 5.0, 5.2 and 5.9 magnitude quakes this morning. No tsunami warnings have been issued. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/10/210_55.php

8. not that much of a joke. |

Scalar weather control (see US DOD secretary's 1980s statements about Soviet research and abilities in weather control) may be popular among some nut jobs, but when indonesian fires threatened millions, the USSR DID offer to build them a hurricane to put the fires out. (They rejected the offer) The CIA issued a report discussing the potential for using weather for military methods in the 1990s. And one Wisconsin democratic senator ( now deceased?) complained to the US navy about extra long frequency waves that were to be used to communicate with US subs, transmitted from a Wisconsin location, demanded that the Navy stop it because of health issues and the potential for adverse weather side effects. When I studied in the USSR back in 1976, there were discussions of how they could create earth and seaquakes, and the potential use against China (at that time, a mortal enemy, even worse than the USA)
Do scalar weather control technologies exist? I don't know. I'm no conspiracy theorist. But the Soviets put in lots of money and time on them and at least 20 yrs ago, worried the hell out of our own military leaders.

2. Tsunamis that require warnings usually arise from landslides |
|
or quakes >7.0.
No idea what's causing the swarm, some 32 in the last 2 1/2 days.
It's interesting to watch, though.

3. The 5.9 was 43 miles down |
|
The others seem to range from 2 to 11 miles deep. Might be some volcanic activity going on down there. Maybe signaling an eruption?

4. Fromt he map they all appear to be on the subduction zone. |
|
In which case EQ swarms are not unusual. After all, the ocean crust is being sucked down like a vacuum cleaner at that spot.

5. That's why this got my attention |
|
I'm in Oregon along the same plate boundary. Our "big one" will be a subduction zone quake. They have occurred on a 300 year cycle and we are overdue.

6. The fault zone is more active these days |
|
There was a volcanic eruption near Anchorage recently, too. Nothing major, just enough to make the national news.
It's a seismically active area; this appears to be normal stuff. There are several Alaskan DUers who have weighed in on this lately.

9. Historically a swarm like this at this location occurred only one other time |
|
That was March 30, 2009. That day there were also three 5.0 plus quakes recorded.
