Solar Bullet Train concept
http://www.solarbullet.com/Front_page/index.html

Arizona leads the world into the future with the first combination Solar-power generation/High-speed passenger rail system

This innovative public transportation concept will use free, non-polluting green energy from our greatest natural resource - the sun, to power local commuter rail in Arizona’s major cities and high-speed passenger connections between Phoenix and Tucson.

"Travel between Phoenix and Tucson in about 30 minutes."

Later phases will extend this service to Flagstaff and Nogales

The southwest has some of the broadest coverage area of high density solar exposure in the nation. A system design that uses solar power as the primary energy source simply makes sense. Tourists will go out of their way to travel to Arizona to see its spectacular and accessible scenery as well as travel on its unique solar-powered high-speed rail system. New businesses and residents will be attracted to the forward looking developments that will spring up along this new passenger-rail system. The system will dramatically reduce their dependence on imported oil and at the same time, minimize greenhouse gas emissions. To do this, all the necessary technology and equipment are currently available in Europe, Asia and Arizona. We look for this innovative system and our new MotionSolar Technology to give Arizona a tourism, economic, employment and technological edge.

4. Expensive and poorly thought out.
The cost for the first phase alone is estimated at $27 billion.

That's a lot of money, particularly for only 100 miles of track. I would argue that $27 billion would be much better spent on mass transit within Phoenix and Tucson. Both sorely need it.

Tourists will go out of their way to travel to Arizona to see its spectacular and accessible scenery as well as travel on its unique solar-powered high-speed rail system.

Isn't it supposed to save energy? If it's billed as a tourist attraction, then tourists flying to Arizona to take a train ride would negate any energy savings.

New businesses and residents will be attracted to the forward looking developments that will spring up along this new passenger-rail system.

New development is not what Arizona needs, the state is already the epitome of development run wild. It's much more important to service the existing development with better mass transit.

This is a clever idea, but it doesn't work until Phoenix and Tucson have the mass transit infrastructure needed to support it. Taking the train from one city to another in 30 minutes is pointless if you can't move about the cities without a car once you get there.

6. sounds good to me
The couple times I've lived in the city I liked using the buses to get around rather than using an auto. cheaper and sometimes quicker as long as I planned my day around the bus schedule which was easy enough to do most days.
