Massive Texas wind farm operating
The Associated Press
Posted on Thursday, 10.01.09

ROSCOE, Texas -- A massive West Texas wind farm billed as the largest in the world is up and running.

German company E.ON Climate and Renewables on Thursday announced the completion of the 100,000-acre wind farm near Roscoe that spans four counties.

The company says the 627-turbine wind farm is now producing energy. It has the capacity to generate 781.5 megawatts, enough electricity to power more than 230,000 homes.

Texas is the nation's top wind power-producing state.

Roscoe is about 220 miles west of Dallas.

6. Glad to read that, but I'm sorry it was built by a German Co.
WHY couldn't it have been done by an AMERICN CO?

12. I'm sure it could have been built by an American company ......
.... if one wanted to. The next question is, Why didn't they want to? I would suspect something about regulations, profit, and loss.

13. Couldn't have been regulations...the Germ. co. would have had
to comply with the same regs. Profit? Probably! I'm positive the Germ. co. made and is making $$ on this project, but they are not as greedy as the US co's!

15. Because 10 years ago Germany implemented policies designed
...to spur growth and innovation in their wind power industry. They now have some of the best technology out there and loads of expertise at project development. Therefore they win a lot of open bids.

Don't worry, we are just getting started and there is yet time for US companies to get in on the ground floor.

About fifty turbines spanning about 10-12 miles...up and running. It generates enough electricity to execute two inmates at once!

16. 100,000 acres to produce a PEAK power of 781 watts?
In fact it is very unlikely that the farm produces 30% capacity utilization, meaning that it would be the equivalent of a two hundred and fifty megawatt reliable plant.

And it's spread over 100,000 acres, leaching lubricants and heavy metals?

What's wrong with people?

It sounds like a tremendous waste of land. It's time to call the Nature Conservancy and tell them that this is another case where ignorance kills.

17. Poor little feller...
He is just crushed that the Dems won and we are NOT going to build McCain's gazillion nukular plants.

Isn't it great that the Dems won?

I think it is.
