Anyone here ever work for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)?
Or know someone who did, like a Grand-Father or Uncle?

I have a CD by a current Folk Singer named John McCutcheon who has a fairly new song (2003) that they would probably like to hear. Here's a link to the CD (which also has the lyrics if you scroll down the page)and the best part, he made it part of FREE MP3 files from this CD. At the Live show I went to, he said he called them (most of the songs on this CD) "short shelf life" songs, most are about our current corrupt government.

The CD is Stand Up! ...Broadsides for Our Time

At Folk Music .com

Here's the MP3 page

and

Here's the MP3 Boys in Green

2. My uncle did
He died a few years ago. He used what he learned in the CCC to open his own landscaping company. Once he had some money (and he had quite a lot), he became a Republican. My dad used to argue with him about that every chance he got, pointing out he wouldn't have had a business if it wasn't for FDR and the Democrats.

7. OK, no argument here. He was at Convict Lake and Mt. Lassen around
1932 - don't know how long he was in - for hopping freight trains. Didn't talk much about it.

6. I worked at a historical society
in northern Minnesota and we had many artifacts from those days. The old workers would come to the museum and want to talk about their days in the CC Camps. To a man they were thankful for the chance to have worked in these camps. It not only was a life saver for jobless young men and their families but it influenced them in positive ways for the rest of their lives.

I think this idea would still have merit in many depressed areas of the United States today and possibly third world countries as well. I thrill to the sight of pine trees planted along a highway in perfect rows and beautiful stone shelter houses in parks. Their legacy to us.

8. Thanks For Sharing - My Dad Was In The CCC's......
Camp Harper, G-90 - Company 4630 - Harper, Oregon - 1940. He passed away when I was 11 years old. I vaguely remember him telling me stories about this time in his life. By the tone in his voice I know he enjoyed the experience immensely. I have his original gear trunk from his service. In it was a collection of b/w pictures taken during his stint in the C's in Oregon and Washington. I also have his Company Memories Book. It's gives the history of the Company and is filled with pictures and autographs of the guys he served with. I've visited some CCC websites. Always thought it would be great to visit that part of the country and see the fruits of his Company's efforts. These boys/men that served in the CCC's did a great service to this country in the years when State and National Parks were coming into their own. We have them to thank for preserving pristine forests, lakes, rivers for us to enjoy now.

I have to figure out how to download the song to a CD. I was able to hear the song but don't no how to get it saved to a CD.

I play guitar and it appears to be an easy one to learn.

If anyone knows anyone - Father, Uncle, Grandfather or Friend - that served in this same Company during the period my Dad was in I would like to get in contact with them. It would be great to show them the memorablia I have and get their impressions.

Thanks for the posting - its opened up a new folk singer for me to explore as well - Jim McCutcheon.

9. To copy it to a CD, this answer assumes that a window pops up that says...
...Opening Boys in Green.mp3 You have chosen to open Boys in Green.mp3 which is a:MP3 Audio...

What should Firefox do with this file?

Internet Explorer is slightly different.

But, instead of playing it (which is the top option in the Windows XP window that pops up) you make sure the button selected is "Save to Disk." Click OK.

Then when the "Enter name of file to save to..." window comes up, click Desk Top (on the left), then click save.

Once it's downloaded, you need to pick a program to open it and burn it to CD, Real Player will do this at 2x if you have the Free version, faster if you have the $29.99 upgrade.

Let me know if this helps, or if you use a different browser and need that type of help.

10. Thanks!
These days we don't so much change the natural environment for the "better," we try to fix what we've broken.

The legacy of the CCC is that they taught the public to have a less adversarial relationship with the land; taught us that sharing some sort of peaceful coexistence with nature was a far better thing than the obliteration of nature.

Many trails and structures the CCC built are quite beautiful and inviting.
