Save your food from the refrigerator.

This is one of the coolest things i have ever seen. Brilliant. It is food storage that incorporates damp sand, natural gases, light and dark for simple no-power food storage.

2. That really is very cool.

Next time I get ambitious... I'll think about how cool this would be.

3. There's something I've ALWAYS wanted to try with eggs, but never got around to...

Take an egg, hard boil it, then take it from the boiling water and put it immediately into molten paraffin. Let it sit a few minutes, then carefully lift it out. All the pores in the egg shell should be sealed with paraffin and the eggs should effectively be "canned", i.e. sealed from the outside air while still hot enough to kill all bacteria.

My theory is that boiled eggs so "canned" would have a room temperature shelf life of years. I've just never gotten around to actually trying it out.

4. The website was rather sparse
but adequate bush refrigeration can be attained with a sealed vessel surrounded by vegetable matter and chicken wire, the vegetable matter soaked and the whole business left out for the sun to evaporate the water. I imagine it would also work with a burlap bag and wet sand.

The interior stays a reliable 45-50F, adequate for storing things like milk short term, advantageous when the ambient temperature is 90F or more.

Obviously, it works a bit better in dryer climates but it works in humid climates, too.

Here is a link for an ambitious one: http://www.chelseagreen.com/content/project-evaporative-cooler-box-draft/

5. Who puts spices in the refrigerator anyway?
(Exception: I do put paprika in the refrigerator; I'm not sure why, except that I think I read to do that once a long time ago.)

6. Interesting. Does anyone
have any idea where one could obtain the spice / rice jars? Or how one without a lot of skills could improvise them?
