I just looked at the extended forecast - if it holds, then 25 of the 30 days of June will be above 90 degrees - in most cases, around 94-95 degrees. As an avid gardener, this is making it damn near impossible to keep tomatoes healthy enough to produce a decent crop. We've lived here for 18 years and it typically takes until July to get unbearable.....I can't imagine what is in store for the world, but it ain't going to be pretty.

1. Just about the same here.
Nights are well above 70, tomatoes are slow, except for the Tommy toes ( Sweet 100)
which produce even in high temps.
Peppers are slow, too.
I am growing them in bright shade this year.

In 2006 it hit 90 in Mid-May here and stayed there till fall, we got few tomatoes.

2. one of the ninos is changing
the storm patterns we were getting in the last 5 years in the iowa, southern wisconsin, and northern illinois have moved south. the central part of the country are getting what we did.

global warning is changing the severity of these storms. by the way we are not the only continent that is experiencing bad weather. erupoe has had severe flooding from spain to poland.

3. It's been 5-10 degrees above normal
Edited on Thu Jun-17-10 01:09 PM by RedEarth
here in Oklahoma City for the past month(normal for this time of month is 87-88, predicted to be 95-97 and high humidity). During the last six months we've had record snowfall(14" on 12/24, record hail storm four weeks ago and record rainfall(12 1/2") three days ago.

I think El Nino might have played a part in the record snowfall and perhaps the hail storm and record rainfall, but from what I understand a warmer climate also causes more intense storms. Joe Rohm at Climate Progress pointed out that this past winter the record snowfall in parts of the country wasn't caused by colder temps(which the right wing claims), but by more precipitation(result of El Nino).

BTW, in about two weeks, I should be able to harvest my first Cherokee Purple of the year(most god awful tomato I've ever eaten in my life...just kidding.) I've already gotten a lot of fruit from my Sungolds and several other cherry plants, but haven't gotten any full size yet.

I've got 200 or so plants going this year (most in pots) - a watering nightmare.

6. And, to illustrate the difference between climate and weather,
here in Seattle we have not yet reached a daytime temperature of 75 F. Tomatoes? Ha, ha ha. This is the latest in the year that we have ever gone (since records have been kept) without reaching 75.

7. To be fair
This is not evidence of global warming. This, like snowstorms in the winter, are examples of local weather, not climate change.

8. I understand the principle, but in truth, Raleigh has gone zone 7 to zone 8
over the past decade or so - we are warming up here, we have changed a garden frost zone, which is significant. If it were just this particular June that was odd, I would agree with you. But it is clearly a trend for warming for this region.
