UK Likely To Miss Self-Imposed GHG Targets - FT
Tony Blair has returned from his visit to Washington with vague promises from George W. Bush, the US president, about tackling climate change. Measures to slow global warming are one of the two priorities for Britain at the Group of Eight summit in Gleneagles next month.

But the UK itself is likely to miss the targets set by Mr Blair for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, unless a government review of climate change policy now under way can come up with measures to slash the country's rising output of carbon dioxide.

Last year, emissions of greenhouse gases rose by 1.6 per cent according to the Office for National Statistics, owing mainly to an increase in emissions from electricity generators.

The rise puts in peril the government's tough self-imposed target of cutting emissions by 20 per cent between 1990 and 2010, and casts doubt on Mr Blair's strategy for combating climate change."
