TVO: No Shady Businesses on Nuclear Construction Site
19 . 10 . 2010 8 : 37 ( updated 20 . 10 . 2010 15 : 04 )
The energy company Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) has refuted allegations that shady businesses are
operating on the site of the Olkiluoto nuclear plant in southwest Finland .
A spot check by health and safety inspectors during September revealed scores of businesses unknown to
the authorities. TVO says there are other operations on the site apart from construction. Regulations require
the French nuclear power company Areva , who is building the new reactor for TVO, to deliver a quarterly list
of companies involved in the construction project. TVO says all of the businesses operating in the area are
doing so legally .
Matti Harjuniemi , chair of the Finnish Construction Trade Union, says he has been suspicious of the going -
ons at Olkiluoto for some time . The union is particularly concerned about subcontracting chains that are
difficult to trace .
“ The Olkiluoto construction site is enclosed behind a fence . Finnish authorities have no idea of what ’s going
on behind those walls ,” says Harjuniemi .
The Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority ( STUK) is scheduled to inspect the site next week . YLE

3. Accurate: Accused nuclear vendor denies guilt.
Why are you covering for a nuclear energy vendor contracting with unapproved and "shady" businesses to build a nuclear plant?

There couldn't be a worse place for shoddy construction. As for allowing unscreened people access to working on any aspect of a nuclear power plant, well, the potential for terrorists engaging in sabotage during the building process is probably nothing to be concerned with, right? After all, it might not bear fruit for a decade or two, so why worry today?

4. Let me know if they get fines for their behavior.
They seem pretty sure of themselves that they violated no rules.
