The biggest enviro and security threat in the last decade...
(from an email earlier today, sorry no letter "below and attached")

TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION ON THE BIGGEST ENVIRONMENTAL AND SECURITY THREAT WE HAVE FACED IN THE LAST DEACDE.

The vote on the Bush/Cheney/fossil, agribusiness & nuclear industry's Energy Bill is 3 pm today 11/18 in House, & Wed 11/19 in Senate.

Below and attached is a letter to Congress from most of the nation’s environmental leaders and an article from today’s Washington Post in which all the Democratic candidates strongly oppose the bill and attack the bill as a huge gift to the oil, coal, automobile and other interests. In the bill is buried every opportunity to skirt environmental requirements for domestic coal, oil, gas and nuclear resource extraction and power production. There are over $50 B worth of subsidies to the fossil fuel industry and a new set of hurdles for increasing CAFÉ standards. Moreover, there is no money for conservation and no requirement for the electric power industry to increase the use of renewable energy. There is a strong chance that the bill will pass. It is not clear that the Senate can stop the 60 votes necessary to stop a filibuster some Democratic senators intend to conduct. Because of an ethanol subsidy several Democratic senators have agreed to the bill. The bill moves us in a direction that will make us more dependent on imported oil, despite the fact that it is billed to do just the opposite.

WE NEED YOUR HELP IN MOBILIZING YOUR CONSTITUENCIES TO OPPOSE THIS BILL IMMEDIATELY. WE CANNOT WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW! PLEASE CONTACT AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE AND ASK THEM TO CALL OR OTHERWISE CONTACT THEIR SENATORS IMMEDIATELY. WE NEED REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC VOTES. NOT ALL THE REPUBLICANS ARE BEHIND THE BILL.

Warmest regards and hope that you will take swift action.
