In Past 10 Years, Pakistan's Population Has Increased 24%
LAHORE: Pakistan retained its position as the worldís sixth most populous country during the last decade. There had been 24% increase in the population during the last 10 years, says a research conducted by the Development Reporting Cell with regard to the increase of population.

According to Population Census Organisation (PCO), population in the country stood at 139.9 million in the year 2000 while in 2010 it stood at 173.5 million as stated by the Planning Commission in its report Population Projection for the 10th Five Year Plan 2010-15. Accordingly the population had swollen by 33.6 million in a decade.

On the other hand, there had been an increase of 36% in the manpower in need of employment. This figure in 2008-09 stood at 53.7 million as compared to 39.3 million in 1999-2000. Providing employment to the emerging workforce has become an uphill task for the rulers in the absence of any effective national policy to thwart affects of international recession and worst energy crisis faced by the country.

According to experts, extra manpower could only be accommodated through quality governance. If the increase in the rural and urban population is reviewed, in the urban sector it is double as compared to the rural sector although the increase is almost equal with regard to number of persons. There had been an increase of 16.8 million (18%) in the rural population while in the urban areas it stood at 16.9 million (36.6%). The rural population had grown to over 110 million from 93.6 million while the urban population has reached to 63 million from 46.1 million. Presently 36% population lives in the urban areas and 64% in the rural areas. On an average the increase of population in the urban areas is 3% while the overall increase of country’s population in accordance with the Economic Survey of Pakistan 2009-10 stands at 2.05%.

1. To have it increase so much over the last ten years is utterly shocking.
