Incandescent Bulbs

I had a Teabagger at work tell me that the "gubmint" is going to outlaw them.
Since I take everything this idiot says politically as a regurgitation of RW talkingpoints, therefore lies, could someone fill me in to the truth.

A quick search of Google got mixed results.

4. So what if they do.
They last longer and save money and energy. Ask your teabagger associate if they have some sort of problem with saving money.

RW always use this knee-jerk reaction of "They're taking away our freedoms!!" shtick. Freedom to buy/drive gaz guzzlers? Freedom to buy incandescent bulbs? Where in the Constitution does it say you have the right to buy or drive anything?

It personally would not surprise me if the govt. wants to phase incandescent bulbs out. It would just be like the phase out of leaded gasoline. They'll live just fine without them.

6. Except it will be impossible to enforce disposal regulations on CFLs...
...if there are any actually in place. We'll end up with mercury contaminating landfills forever. Bring on LEDs.

10. Should give LEDs a push to be developed, but yeah, we're going to have a lot of mercury...
...sitting around due to this bump.

13. I'm not so sure that they do last longer.
Edited on Sat Feb-05-11 10:07 AM by FBaggins
I've had horrible luck with the ones I've used. I don't know if it's "about the same" or "a little longer", but the notion that they last several times as long seems dishonest.

8. Phase-out of incandescent light bulbs
"Although the United States is not phasing out incandescent light bulbs, it has set minimum efficiency standards for lighting which preclude most legacy incandescent designs; these minimum standards phase in between 2012 and 2014."

Phase-out of incandescent light bulbs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Governments around the world have passed measures to prohibit the sale of incandescent light bulbs for general lighting. The aim is to encourage use of more energy-efficient lighting alternatives, such as compact fluorescent lamp (CFLs) and LED lamps. Brazil and Venezuela started to phase them out in 2005,<1> and the European Union, Switzerland,<2> and Australia<3> started to phase them out in 2009.<4> Likewise, other nations are planning scheduled phase-outs: Argentina,<5> Russia, and Canada in 2012,<6> and Malaysia in 2014.<7> Although the United States is not phasing out incandescent light bulbs, it has set minimum efficiency standards for lighting which preclude most legacy incandescent designs; these minimum standards phase in between 2012 and 2014.<8>

9. You'll still be able to get 'em though, they just will be marketed differently.
They'll be for "stage lighting" or whatever.

But as far as household lighting, yep, bye bye.

12. Our local utility newsletter gave the whole timetable
and there were gobs of classes of exceptions, where you could still sell an incandescent based on anticipated use.
