Mailing packages
I mailed some towels (housewarming gift) last week. I didn't use any extravagent services, just DHL ground. Cost me $40.

This week, I was in again, and I started talking with the owner about prices. He started talking about fuel surcharges. He said that last year the fuel surcharges were around 3%. This year they are around 16%, and he's started passing that cost on to his customers, cuz he can't afford to eat the surcharge any more.

He said the fuel prices are making things really hard on small biz owners. I'm sure it's especially immediate in a transportation-based business like his.

He also said he's fully expecting things to get worse. "We'll never see gasoline under $2 again", was his comment.

2. His usual practice is to ship lowest-cost option, including USPS.
Although I didn't explicitly ask him that time. This ended up being an oversized box, which he said adds a lot to the cost.

I think from now on I will ship a book with everything. He said today that if the shipment contains even one book, you can get the book-rate. My friends and family can always use another book.

4. Not trying to be an a$$ ...
if the packages is going to be oversized (?) and that adds to the cost ----- consider breaking into smaller packages.

Postal workers: Aren't there boxes from the post office that are of a specific size that you can pack as much as you can fit for one price?
